10 things every woman should know before she starts HRT.
-Start with a DEXA scan. Bone and muscle loss can begin before your bloodwork shows a problem, this gives you a baseline to actually track HRT's impact.
-Whatever dose you start on won't be your dose forever. Your plan should shift as your body and life stage change.
-HRT isn't a substitute for the basics. Nutrition, movement, sleep, stress, alcohol, and gut health still have to be part of the plan, otherwise you're missing the foundation underneath it.
-Even moderate drinking can undo progress. Alcohol tends to worsen sleep, hot flashes, anxiety, inflammation, and how your body processes estrogen.
-Hair thinning and stubborn weight gain aren't something you're supposed to just tolerate. You shouldn't be told to "give it more time" indefinitely.
-Testosterone isn't only about libido, and progesterone isn't only relevant if you have a uterus. Both matter for brain function, nervous system health, skin, and hair, for everyone.
-Pellets aren't the place to start. They're hard to adjust once placed, and side effects can stick around for months if the dose isn't right.
-Get tested, no matter the delivery method. Creams, patches, injectables, hormone levels should always be monitored.
-A prescription online isn't the same as real HRT care. This should be part of a bigger, more personalized picture, not just a script for a patch.
-Bioidentical and synthetic hormones are not interchangeable, even though people use the terms that way. And birth control is not HRT, one suppresses your natural hormones, the other supports them.
