As a sports psychologist, I’ve heard far too many stories from high school and college athletes who started strong but slowly lost their confidence, motivation, and love for the game because of a coach’s behavior. Yelling, manipulation, favoritism, broken promises - can take a toll on any athlete's mental health.

That’s why I wrote this practical guide: How to Deal with a Toxic Coach – A Survival Guide for Competitive Athletes.

If you’re an athlete, parent, or coach who cares about young athletes, I think you’ll find it valuable.

Last month I had a blast speaking to the 9th–12th graders at The Benjamin School on the Keys to Building Healthy Relationships.

These students were sharp, engaged, and asked some really thoughtful questions. It was energizing to talk about authentic connection, trust, communication, boundaries, and how to spot red flags — all skills that truly are keys to lifelong success and happiness.

Huge thank you to the incredible team at Benjamin for the invitation. I’m grateful to share this work with such an impressive group of young people.

Had a great time speaking to the employees on the impact of what we eat, and different nutrients, on our mental health. The foods we eat - or don’t eat - can have a 30% impact on our mood, mental health and performance.

Thanks to the City of Port St Lucie for inviting me to speak about this important topic.

What’s a tennis player doing crashing a pickleball tournament???

Hey, it’s Dr. Darius here, and I’m lifelong tennis guy, clinical & sports psychologist, and now officially hooked on pickleball as my #2 sport. After years of baseline grinding, I picked up a paddle last year… and haven’t looked back.

Why the switch? Pickleball is giving me a lot of what I love about tennis — strategy, competition, quick reflexes — and a fun social element.

Don’t worry, though. I still play tennis weekly and it’s my
Number 1 ❤️

I’m Dr. Darius, clinical and sports psychology and pickleball player. I started playing pickleball recreationally about a year ago, and am playing in my first tournament to put my skills to the test 💪 I love practicing what I preach. Here are a few mindset tips to get into the right mindset to perform your best.

One of the highlights of Summer 2025 was hitting the tennis court with my dad, an inspiring man who embodies vitality and balance. Without giving away his age, let’s just say I hope to play with his energy and skill years from now!

His commitment to work-life balance over the years, healthy eating, and active habits is a powerful reminder of how small intentional choices lead to optimal performance — on and off the court. As a sports psychologist, I’m grateful for his example.

Here’s to the quiet strength of those mentors who show us how to live fully, every day, through their actions.

Delray Beach native Coco Gauff credited Simone Biles for inspiring her to overcome anxiety that caused her to cry during her US Open tennis match. See link below ⬇️ bit.ly/3JEWLxs
