over the years i’ve noticed that i often return from a trip or adventure with more clarity than i have been able to gain from days/weeks/months of looping on a same conundrum. a renewed confidence, connection with self. turns out, i’m not alone. and it’s a thing.

research is finding it’s not just because travel is magic - it’s because stepping outside our usual environment changes what becomes visible. sometimes we don’t need more insight, analysis, processing, we may also just need a different… horizon.

predictive processing… the brain is not passively taking in reality, it is constantly guessing it, filling in the gaps before we may even realize it’s happening.

the brain is building a story ahead of time using memory, pattern, emotion, past injury, culture, expectation, and survival. it predicts what is about to happen, then it checks whether reality matches the prediction.

most of what we think we are “seeing” is actually the brain’s best guess.

the nervous system would rather predict than start from scratch every second. so it fills in gaps, assumes and edits. it creates shortcuts. sometimes this keeps us safe. but sometimes it keeps us stuck.

if you were hurt, your brain may predict danger before danger exists. if you were unseen or ignored, your brain may predict rejection before connection has a chance. if chaos was familiar, calm can feel suspicious.

we do not simply experience the world. we experience our brain’s prediction of the world, constantly updated.

healing is not just about changing thoughts. it is also teaching the brain that its old predictions are no longer the only option or truth available.

a good check in question to ask yourself when feeling activated and it also feels like an over-reaction: “how much of this is past, how much is right now?”
