DPT-Lapeer is back with the LakeVille Community Schools Falcons September student-athletes of the month!

Senior, Mackenzie Blogg, is making waves on the volleyball team. She currently averages three aces, four kills, and one block per game this season. Mackenzie has become a leader on and off the court this year, earning herself a spot on the National Honors Society, and is well on her way to earning an All-Academic Award as a senior this year. In the winter you’ll catch Mackenzie on the basketball court, in the spring she’ll be on the soccer field, and as a first this year, she’ll be trying her hand at powerlifting as well. DPT is proud of the well-rounded student athlete you are, Mackenzie!

A junior on the cross-country team, Wyatt Roberts, has been a consistent front runner this year. He placed 3rd at the County Press meet, he earned points at MMAC meets to get All Conference First Team, and he has been an outspoken leader that his team has looked up to. Wyatt currently holds all A’s and is dual enrolled with courses at Mott Community College. He is not only a standout student athlete, but is also part of Student Council, Captains Council, on the powerlifting team, and shows animals at the fair. Way to represent Falcon nation, Wyatt!

Congratulations on an outstanding fall season so far, Mackenzie and Wyatt. Finish strong!

DPT-Lapeer brings you the North Branch Broncos September student-athletes of the month!

Haylee Hathcock, a junior cheerleader, has been hard at work this season. She is into her third year of sideline cheer while also taking multiple dance classes. Haylee maintains a high GPA while balancing academics and athletics, all with a smile and a helping hand. Her coach says, “Haylee is the most kind, helpful athlete I’ve had the privilege of coaching.” Way to be a well-rounded student athlete for NB, Haylee!

Senior, Michael Spisz, is a team captain and a leader on the football team. He currently leads the team in every statistical category including touchdowns, yards, receptions, tackles, and interceptions. In the winter season, he’ll wrestle (where he currently has 98 wins and will soon join a very short list of wrestlers with 100 career matches), and in the spring he’ll play baseball. Michael will have 12 varsity letters by the end of his high school career. He currently holds a 3.86 GPA, has been on the honor roll every semester, and is taking AP classes. He just got offered a scholarship to play football at Lawrence Tech, was voted Homecoming King by his peers, and has a positive attitude that is respected by many. Michael’s coach says he is a “stand-up community member and will always do the right thing.” Way to represent your team and your town, Michael!

Congratulations to this month’s Bronco student athletes. Good luck to you both at the end of your fall season!

"Functional training" simply means practicing the kinds of movements routinely performed throughout a normal day. For example, carrying and moving objects is a common task that challenges our core muscles. Consider these unique carrying methods to engage and strengthen your abdominal and lower back muscles. Check with your physical therapist to see how to best incorporate these into your training program.

“My back hurts, I need rest.” WRONG! Modified activity and continued use within your tolerance is generally superior advice to stopping all activity. Here are a couple gentle exercises that may be tolerated during minor flare ups. The first exercise shows a drawing in maneuver where you “draw in” your belly button toward your spine. The second shows a pelvic tilting exercise where you gently engage your abdominals and press your back into the table or bed. Be sure to see one of our therapists if your back is bothering you! Let us develop an individualized plan to help you get back to 100%!

Low back pain and radiating symptoms can be tricky with finding the root of the problem. The piriformis muscle is located right above the sciatic nerve and can be the culprit behind radiating symptoms from the low-back/glute down the leg. Stretching this muscle can help reduce pain and symptoms.
