Self-regulation is the brain’s ability to shift and adapt to what life is asking of us.

It’s what helps us focus during school or work, calm our bodies when stress gets high, recover after frustration, and reset when we feel overwhelmed or exhausted. When the brain struggles with self-regulation, people can feel reactive, distracted, anxious, emotionally flooded, or stuck in survival mode.

Neurofeedback is designed to support the brain in learning more effective patterns over time, helping clients build better focus, emotional regulation, resilience, and nervous system flexibility.

What if we’ve been treating attention, focus, and emotional regulation in kids like it’s only a medication problem… when the brain itself can learn to self-regulate?

A growing body of research has been directly comparing Neurofeedback training with stimulant medication such as methylphenidate for children with ADHD—and the findings are getting harder to ignore.

In controlled studies, both approaches show improvement in attention and behavior regulation. But here’s what stands out:

Neurofeedback is not about suppressing symptoms chemically—it’s about teaching the brain how to change its own patterns of activity over time. Instead of forcing focus, it builds the brain’s capacity for self-regulation through repeated feedback and reinforcement.

Medication like methylphenidate often shows faster symptom reduction, especially in the short term. But neurofeedback is being studied as a non-pharmacological approach that may support longer-term brain training and skill development without daily medication dependence.

This is not about ā€œeither/or.ā€

It’s about expanding what’s possible.

And for many families, the real question becomes:
What if attention challenges aren’t just something to manage—but something the brain can be trained to regulate more effectively?

I will be launching Neurofeedback services in my practice soon, offering families another evidence-informed option—one that focuses on brain self-regulation, emotional control, attention, and long-term skill building.

If you’ve ever felt like traditional approaches helped—but didn’t fully address the underlying patterns—you’re not alone. And you may want to stay tuned for what’s coming next.

More details coming soon.

As a therapist and a mom, I’ve learned something important…

Sometimes people are not ā€œdifficult.ā€
Sometimes their nervous systems are exhausted.

The child melting down.
The teen who can’t focus.
The adult who feels constantly overwhelmed.
The parent stuck in survival mode.

Sometimes the brain has adapted to stress for so long that it forgets how to rest.

That’s one reason I’m so excited to begin bringing neurofeedback into my practice.

The more I learn about the brain and nervous system, the more I believe healing is about so much more than behavior. It’s about regulation, safety, connection, and flexibility.

What drew me to the NewMind functional neurofeedback approach is that it looks at the whole person — not just symptoms.

Not simply:
ā€œWhat diagnosis do you have?ā€

But:
ā€œWhat has your nervous system been carrying?ā€

I’m incredibly excited to continue this training and eventually offer this support to the families and individuals I serve.

Sometimes what looks like ā€œbad behaviorā€ is actually a nervous system in survival mode.

What we often see on the outside:
• emotional outbursts
• shutting down
• hyperactivity
• anxiety
• difficulty focusing
• irritability
• overwhelm

…can sometimes be a brain and body struggling to regulate stress.

As a therapist, I’ve worked with many children and adults who were trying incredibly hard while still feeling stuck.

That’s one reason I’ve been training in neurofeedback — a brain-based approach that focuses on nervous system regulation and self-regulation support.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing more about what neurofeedback is, who it may help, and how it may support healing alongside therapy and other interventions.

If you’ve ever thought:
ā€œWe’ve tried everything, but something still feels offā€¦ā€

You are not alone. šŸ’›
