Although crawling is technically no longer a milestone according to the CDC, it is a skill that is crucial for a child’s development❗️
>Maintaining quadruped is the first time a child is weight bearing through the knees into the hips and hands into the shoulders.
>Weight bearing through the hands helps to strength the small intrinsic hand muscles, as well as the wrists in preparation for fine motor skills.
>It establishes a cross-lateral patterns and requires crossing midline, which is important for development of the corpus callosum.
>It demands coordination of the upper extremities and lower extremities in order to move.
>It challenges a child’s ability to problem solve to navigate their environment and any obstacles they may face.
>It develops a child’s sensory and vestibular system and improves their body awareness as they move through space.
>It improved a child’s core strength.
