Burke is committed to shaping the next generation of healthcare professionals by offering student learning and on-site training opportunities. This summer, we welcomed a range of high school and higher-ed scholars to participate in three programs designed to provide hands-on healthcare experience:

- White Plains YOUTH BUREAU’s Medical Career Pathways Program: High school students had the chance to explore careers in healthcare and learn more about our Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation programs.

- Health Experience Learning Program (HELP): Seven college students participated in our 10-week, paid immersive experience in rehabilitative therapy, allowing students to shadow expert therapists, work directly with patients as rehabilitation aides, and gain exposure to physical, occupational, speech/language, and recreation therapy.

- Nursing Externship Program: Nine nursing students gained hands-on clinical experience in a supportive and collaborative environment.

Burke Rehabilitation has been awarded $75,000 in grant funding by the Resmed Foundation to advance a first-of-its-kind clinical research project integrating sleep health into rehabilitation care for patients with acquired brain disorders.

Led by Dr. Mooyeon Oh-Park, Chief Physician of Research & Innovation, in collaboration with the Department of Pulmonary/Sleep Medicine at Montefiore Health System, the project will focus on identifying and treating obstructive sleep apnea in this patient population, an often-overlooked factor that can significantly impact recovery. By embedding sleep screening and treatment into standard care, Burke aims to improve outcomes and deliver more personalized rehabilitation – just one example of how Burke is pioneering innovation to address the real-world challenges our patients face and maximize their recovery.

We’re excited to welcome eight new Residents to the Burke ACGME-accredited Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) Residency Program. Over the next three years, this new class will further develop PM&R-specific knowledge and skills as they train throughout our award-winning hospital’s specialized units and participate in clinical rotations at Montefiore Medical Center, HHC Jacobi Medical Center, and specialty clinics in Westchester.

This new class also includes two Sports Medicine Fellows who will spend the upcoming year advancing sports medicine skills rotating at institutions associated with Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Montefiore Health System, and the Burke Outpatient Physician Practice. They will gain broad exposure to care across youth, master, and adaptive athletes, along with sideline coverage experience at the high school, collegiate, and professional levels through Manhattan University and Archbishop Stepinac High School.
