Navigating life with a disability can feel overwhelming, but you don't have to do it alone. πŸ’™

WILC's Peer Advisement program connects you with individuals who have lived experience with disability. They get it because they've been there.

This Disability Pride Month, we're reminded that community is everything. Reach out to learn how peer support can make a difference. πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

July is Disability Pride Month, and July 26th is a date worth knowing. πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

In 1990, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law, prohibiting discrimination and guaranteeing equal access in employment, transportation, education, and public life. It remains one of the most important civil rights achievements in U.S. history.

At WILC, we honor this legacy and the advocates who made it possible. Here's to the progress made and the work still ahead. πŸ’™

Is playing sports β€œself care”? πŸ€

Sports build confidence, foster belonging, and empower us to reach our full potential. But for many individuals with disabilities, the cost of equipment, transportation, camps, and league fees puts these opportunities out of reach.

In honor of Joe Bravo, who participated in and championed adaptive sports throughout his career, WILC created the Joe Bravo "Play it Forward" Scholarship, to help youth and adults with disabilities right here in our community access the life-changing benefits of sports.

This , you can help someone else discover the power of sport.
πŸ€ Enter to win a signed Mitchell Robinson ( #23) New York Knicks jersey; all entries (and donations of any amount!) go to the scholarship fund.

🎟️ Raffle ends August 31: https://www.wilc.org/joe-bravo-scholarship/

Today, WILC is proud to launch the Joe Bravo "Play it Forward" Scholarship πŸ€ honoring the remarkable life and legacy of longtime disability advocate, Paralympian, Rolling Knicks player and coach, and former WILC Executive Director Joe Bravo.

Joe believed adaptive sports weren't just about competition; they were about confidence, independence, community, and discovering what's possible.

This scholarship will help youth and adults with disabilities overcome financial barriers to participating in adaptive sports by helping cover expenses like adaptive equipment, transportation, camp registration, league fees, and more.

πŸ€ To celebrate the launch, we're raffling a signed Mitchell Robinson ( #23) New York Knicks jersey from the 2026 Championship season!

🎟️ Every raffle entry helps support the scholarship and gives you the chance to own a unique piece of Knicks history.

πŸ“… Raffle closes August 31

No two lives move to the same rhythm. We each navigate the world in our own way, shaped by our experiences, our challenges, and our communities. Let's celebrate the rhythms that make us who we are.

🌟 Another Busy Week at New York Connects – Helping People Navigate Challenges and Find Solutions! 🌟
Here's a snapshot of just some of the work our team has been doing:
🏠 Housing Advocacy
β€’ Assisted a Section 8 tenant experiencing severe water damage and mold by advocating with the City of Yonkers Building Department and requesting a housing inspection to help ensure safe living conditions.
β€’ Continued advocating for tenants experiencing unsafe housing conditions by working with local code enforcement officials
⚑ Utility Advocacy
β€’ Helped a consumer who believed her electric meter may be incorrectly shared with a neighboring apartment after receiving unusually high utility bills.
πŸŽ–οΈ Supporting Our Veterans
β€’ Assisted a disabled U.S. Army veteran seeking to transfer his HUD-VASH Housing Choice Voucher to Westchester County after years of living in hazardous housing conditions.
β€’ Referred the veteran to VA programs, housing authorities, veterans' services, and legal resources while providing ongoing housing navigation and advocacy.
πŸ”‘ Housing Search Assistance
β€’ Conducted outreach to multiple apartment communities in White Plains on behalf of a veteran using a HUD-VASH voucher.
β€’ Submitted housing inquiries, connected with leasing offices and brokers, provided application guidance, explained New York's Source of Income protections, and helped prepare the next steps toward securing stable housing.
πŸ₯ Rehabilitation & Care Coordination
β€’ Provided support to a consumer in a rehabilitation facility who expressed concerns about her medical care and recovery.
β€’ Offered advocacy to help ensure her concerns are addressed and that she receives appropriate care
πŸ’™ What We Do! New York Connects is more than an information center, every day we:
