Congratulations to Michelle Altamura, a NICU nurse at White Plains Hospital, on receiving the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses!

Michelle was nominated by a fellow WPH nurse who experienced her compassion from a different perspective: as a new mom facing an unexpected and frightening moment after the birth of her son. When her newborn was emergently taken to the NICU for further evaluation, Michelle went out of her way to offer comfort and reassurance, answer questions, and help the family navigate those overwhelming first hours. “Her presence alone brought a sense of calm, but it was her words that truly changed everything. In that moment, she gave me something I desperately needed: hope.”

Thankfully, further testing brought good news for the family, but Michelle’s kindness and support left a lasting impact. “Michelle exemplifies what it means to be a nurse. Her kindness, empathy, and willingness to go above and beyond for a family in crisis made an unforgettable impact on us.”

Congratulations, Michelle, and thank you for making such a meaningful difference for your patients and their families!

A brain aneurysm sounds scary, and while there is reason for concern, it isn't always an emergency. As Dr. Jared Cooper explains, unruptured aneurysms may not cause symptoms and are often found by chance, while a ruptured aneurysm is a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate treatment.

Knowing the warning signs and seeking care quickly can save lives. Throughout Brain Aneurysm Awareness Month, we'll be sharing facts to help you better understand brain aneurysms and when to seek emergency care.

Meet Clarence, a graduate of White Plains Hospital's first Project SEARCH intern cohort! Since completing the program, Clarence has continued to be an important part of the WPH community as a volunteer. Through our Creative heARTS program, he brings a cart filled with donated handmade artwork and gifts to units throughout the Hospital, spreading joy to patients and staff along the way. Most recently, Clarence helped distribute crocheted stuffed animals handmade and donated by local high school student Nala, with nurses selecting special items for their patients.

"As soon as we see him, he brightens our day," shared Diana, RN, 4E. "He brings out the good in me and reminds me how meaningful the connections we make here can be."

Clarence's visits have become something our teams look forward to, and we're proud to see the impact he continues to make across our Hospital community!

After months of struggling to eat and drink comfortably, Jim Jaffe came to White Plains Hospital searching for answers. He found them through our Esophageal Program, where his care team, which includes gastroenterologists Dr. Melissa Magrath and Dr. Ahmed Aleman, diagnosed him with achalasia, a rare swallowing disorder, and provided advanced, minimally invasive treatment.

Today, Jim is back to enjoying the foods he loves and says his experience with the team was “10 out of 10.”
