In honor of National Honey Bee 🐝 Day this week we had our Residents paint these bees. 🐝 🐝 🐝 🎨 🖌 doing these project helps keep their motor skills in tune. When cognitive decline happens people fear doing these things because they don't remember how to do them on their own. After they finish they are so proud of their work.

Listen to how we talk about older people and one word keeps showing up.

He's still sharp. She still drives. He still does his own taxes.

We mean it warmly. But look at what's underneath it — every one of those sentences quietly assumes that by now, he shouldn't be. The compliment is really surprise. And he can hear that as clearly as you can.

Tomorrow is National Senior Citizens Day. When Reagan signed the proclamation in 1988, the wording honored older Americans for what they'd achieved — and then, in the same breath, for all they continue to accomplish. Present tense. Not a thank-you note for a finished life.

So here's a suggestion for tomorrow. Instead of thanking him, ask him for something. Advice. A recipe. How to fix a thing.

Being asked is worth more than being thanked. It's the difference between being valued and being appreciated.

Ask your mother what she had for lunch yesterday and she may have to think about it.

Ask her the name of her second-grade teacher and it will come out without a pause.

That's not a lapse. Researchers describe something called the reminiscence bump — adults recall the years between about ten and thirty more sharply than any other stretch of life, because that's when everything was happening for the first time. The ten-thousandth ordinary Tuesday leaves no mark. The first day of first grade leaves a permanent one.

The buses started running again this week, which makes this the best month of the year to ask.

Some questions that work better than "tell me about when you were young":

Who was your first-grade teacher? How did you get to school? What did you carry your lunch in? What did the school smell like? What got you in trouble? What did you want to be back then?

Bring photographs if you have them. Bring pictures of your own kids on their first day this week — the comparison is usually where the best stories come out.

Write down what she says. Every family has one story they wish they'd gotten on paper.

Thank you everyone that showed up and supported Beehive White Rocks First Annual Pop-up Craft and Community Yard Sale. We earned over $250 for the Residents Activity Funds for Outside Games.

Special thank you to Beehive Homes Regional Administrator - Bernadette Mata for supporting us. And, lets not forget the Hospice Agencies that support our great residents, Rosemary from Enchanted Sky Hospice and Joy, Jenna & Sarah from Anvoi Hospice.

We will plan to do this again keep a look out for flyers. And, if you happen to see the residents outside playing corn hole please come join them or root them on! 🌽 🕳

On the phone, she's fine. She's always fine.

Then you drive out in August, and within an hour you've noticed four things nobody mentioned. The milk went off two weeks ago. There's a stack of unopened mail by the door. She takes the stairs sideways now. There's a bruise on her arm and she has an explanation ready a little too quickly.

She wasn't lying to you. Decline this gradual is nearly invisible from the inside, and most people can hold it together for the length of a phone call.

Summer is when families find out — because summer is when we finally stand in the kitchen instead of talking on the phone.

We wrote a guide to what to look for on your next visit, what those signs usually mean, and how to bring it up without it turning into a fight. Including one thing worth checking this month specifically: whether the cooling is actually running, or whether she's been "saving" on it.

There's a question almost every family carries into a tour and almost nobody asks out loud: what would she actually *do* all day?

So we wrote out an ordinary day. Not a highlight reel — a Tuesday.

Coffee when she wakes up, not when a schedule says so. Breakfast cooked in a kitchen down the hall from her bedroom. A card game that's been running for two weeks. Everyone at the same table for lunch, telling the same stories twice. The clouds building over the mountains around three, and the whole porch filling up if the rain comes. Somebody awake all night, so a bad night is never faced alone.

The part families never see coming is the friendships between residents. You can visit your mother every single day and still not be able to hand her a peer — someone her own age who remembers the same songs. That only comes from living alongside other people.
