Cooking becomes a bit of drudgery for me in the winter because the produce at grocery stores is depressing.

Fast forward to garden season and I’m loving cooking dinner! Tonight we made egg casserole from the girls’ eggs - with raw cheese, turkey bacon, red onion and the greens were kale and nasturtium leaves from the garden ❤️

Tomorrow night I will be making a sweet and sour stir fry to include snow peas and garlic scapes from the garden 🤤🤤🤤

Who else is cooking from the garden this time of year?

*pic of egg casserole (uncooked) that just went into the oven! Can’t wait. And yes, we eat late in the summer bc we are always working outside 😂😂😂

Today is yarrow harvest day. Yarrow is one of my fav medicinal herbs, not only because of her wonderful medicinal properties but also bc of the smell. It takes me instantly back to childhood - running through fields of tall grass and wildflowers ❤️

You want to harvest yarrow when it’s freshly blooming. You can take as much of the stalk that has nice green leaves as you like, leaving only a few inches. You can also cut some large green leaves that may be growing there as well. This seems to be a great year for yarrow as I have seen so many large green leaves next to the flowering stalks!!

When processing, you want to run your fingers backwards on the stem to remove the leaves and then snip the flower heads off the top. Stems are to be discarded.

Enjoy the bounty of the summer! And special thanks to my friend Lauren who donates the yarrow growing in her field to me each year ❤️

Always remember the old time garden wisdom “peppers like to hold hands”. What does that mean????

It means that you plant your peppers so their outer leaves touch. What that does for the plant is allow them to shade each others roots. Peppers love heat but if the sun is baking their roots, they won’t produce as bountifully as they would if their roots are shaded. Head in the sun, roots in the shade.

I plant my pepper plants about 9 inches apart, from stem to stem (middle of the hole to middle of the hole). Some people plant them up to a foot apart. I don’t recommend any further.

Having fun roasting in the sun today! I am DETOXING!!!! ❤️🌱❤️😂

The tomato plants have found homes. Thank you!!

I have 5 small but very green and healthy cherry tomato plants left over for free pick up. They are Mexico Midget which is an heirloom variety that the tomatoes don’t crack when it rains and they’re very prolific.

First come, first served. Pls comment when you can pick up. Also posting this on our AW Buy Nothing Group.

Ok….I have a favor to ask. Please describe for me how your tick season is typically (other years) and what it is like this year. Pls describe where you live or hang out (open, clear backyard with grass, woods, take lots of walks in the woods, an outdoors person that is in many outdoor environments, etc). Also mentioning any other bugs that plague you in the summer (garden chiggers, mosquitoes, etc) is helpful.

I am working on something and I need to know if this year is truly worse for ticks or not. And other bugs.

Personally, for my family, our property is not wooded, but we have a lot of tall w**ds that I am in on a regular basis because of w**ding and harvesting herbs. Our grass can get a little long between mowing but not like LONG. We have a lot of bunnies around and we know there are deer on the back of our property and in our meadow of red clover.

We are seeing more ticks than usual. A mix of deer ticks and dog ticks. We have not seen any lone star ticks. We do not usually have many mosquitoes but I do get bit by garden chiggers (not sure if that’s the proper name or not - no see em type bugs) when I work outside, as does my husband.

It doesn’t matter if your comment is long winded. I’m fine with that!

Thank you for helping with my project.

Does anyone need comfrey for fertilizer? That’s all this is good for but comfrey fertilizer is excellent!

You need to trim off and throw away all the flowering bunches or you may end up with true comfrey seeds being planted anywhere you use this - very important! Not sure if viable seeds are contained in the bunches but don’t take any chances.

Pick up today or it gets composted. Msg me for address.
