Here’s something a lot of breeders don’t realize: conventional breeding uses millions of s***m cells per cycle. ICSI only needs one — a single s***m cell, injected directly into the oocyte.

That difference matters. It means one straw of frozen semen can support multiple rounds of ICSI — across multiple mares, and even multiple breeding seasons.

So instead of asking “how many mares can we breed this cycle,” the better question becomes “how many chances can we create from the genetics we already have.”

𝑬𝒎𝒑𝒍𝒐𝒚𝒆𝒆 𝑯𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒍𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 ✨

Meet Natalie Stone, an Equine Embryologist and Semen Trainee who joined the ViaGen team in January 2026.

A North Texas native and Pilot Point High School graduate, Natalie grew up raising and breeding show cattle, which sparked her early interest in animal genetics, reproduction, and producing high-quality animals. Her passion for equine reproduction developed during her time at Tarleton State University, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science in May 2025.

While at Tarleton, Natalie gained hands-on experience in equine and livestock reproduction and further developed her skills through an internship at Toyon Ranch, where she worked with breeding programs, reproductive procedures, embryo transfer, and mare management.

After graduation, Natalie continued her education through IVF Academy USA, earning her Embryology & Andrology certification and receiving specialized training in embryo production, semen analysis, IVF, vitrification, embryo biopsy, and cryopreservation.

We are very grateful to continue growing our team and expanding our projects to further equine production.

Colossal All-Hands 2026 ✨

The Viagen team spent two full days at Colossal head quarters learning about the future of biotechnology and Viagen’s role in furthering those bounds.

48 hours full of seminars, future projects, and team comradery! We are sad to go our separate ways, but excited for what the future holds for the ever expanding relationship between us and Colossal Biosciences!

Yesterday, our team came together under the Texas sun to celebrate the incredible work happening in 𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲, 𝐈𝐂𝐒𝐈, 𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐲𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. ☀️🐴

One of the most rewarding parts of what we do is getting to see the incredible results of so much hard work—from meeting ICSI babies and cloned babies for the very first time to watching them eventually lope across the pasture.

Seeing that journey come full circle, from the very first moments under the microscope to thriving out in the pasture, is truly one of the greatest joys of this job. 🐴❤️

🧬 𝐎𝐨𝐜𝐲𝐭𝐞 𝐯𝐬. 𝐄𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐲𝐨: 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐢𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞?

These two terms are often used in conversations about equine reproduction, but they represent two very different stages in the reproductive process.

🔹 An 𝐨𝐨𝐜𝐲𝐭𝐞 (often called an egg) is the mare's reproductive cell before fertilization. During an OPU (oocyte pick-up) procedure, oocytes are collected from the mare's follicles and carefully evaluated in the lab.

🔹 An 𝐞𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐲𝐨 is created after an oocyte has been successfully fertilized. As it begins to divide and develop, it has the potential to become a pregnancy when transferred to a recipient mare.

Think of it this way:

🥚 𝐎𝐨𝐜𝐲𝐭𝐞 = 𝐁𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧

ViaGen is thrilled to have a small part in the incredible breeding career of the well accomplished ♠️WILD CARDD♠️!
