Former CNN anchor Miles O’Brien revealed that his left forearm was amputated in February 2014 after a freak accident. While the journalist was packing up some TV gear, one of the heavy cases toppled onto his left forearm. The advanced swelling led 54-year-old O'Brien to emergency surgery for a potentially life-threatening condition called compartment syndrome.

Surfer Bethany Hamilton's(center) left arm was bitten off in a shark attack when she was 13. The 2011 film "Soul Surfer" is based on her experience. She went on to compete in professional surfing placing high in many competitions. She has been a guest on shows such as The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Today Show, The Tonight Show and Dude Perfect, and more. She continues to surf and has a faith based outreach program to help others recover from traumatic amputations.

MLB player Jim Abbott was born without a right hand. At 10 years old he was told he would not be able to play baseball. While with the University of Michigan, Abbott won the James E. Sullivan Award as the nation's best amateur athlete in 1987 and won a gold medal in the demonstration event at the 1988 Summer Olympics. He was drafted in the first round of the 1988 MLB draft and reached the major leagues the next year. As a member of the Yankees, he threw a no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians in 1993. Abbott retired with a career record of 87 wins and 108 losses, along with a 4.25 earned run average. He currently works as a motivational speaker.

Oliva Jackson, a stunt performer and actress who appeared in Mad Max: Fury Road, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Resident Evil, was involved in an a serious motorcycle crash on the set of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. The 34 year-old stunt-woman spent two weeks in a medically induced coma following her injuries, which included a brain bleed, a severed artery, facial scarring, broken ribs, paralyzed arm, shattered scapula, broken clavicle, broken humerus, radius, and ulna, an amputated thumb, torn fingers, 7.5 inches of bone missing, and 5 nerves torn out of her spinal chord.
