Listen for the knock of opportunity.💜

Those words were at the heart of Mr. James Maloney’s message as he recently addressed members of the Young Men’s Development Group in Wichita Falls.

As a proud U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Maloney shared a remarkable journey of resilience and determination. Facing childhood tuberculosis, he refused to let adversity define his future. Instead, he developed a mindset that carried him through military service, a successful career helping establish manufacturing workforces across the United States, and a life dedicated to making a difference.

Speaking to young men ages 18 to 35, he encouraged them to recognize opportunities when they appear and to have the courage to answer when life comes calling.

His story was a powerful reminder that our struggles do not determine our destiny. Character, perseverance, and faith do.

At HOWF, we are honored to care for extraordinary individuals like Mr. Maloney, whose legacy of service, wisdom, and encouragement continues to inspire the next generation.

A life well led is measured not only by what we accomplish, but by the hope we instill, the wisdom we share, and the lives we touch along the way.

Meet the volunteer who's always willing to go the extra mile and then a few more - David S, our HIVE Award Nominee of the Month! 💜

In just a few short months, David has completed 27 volunteer shifts, including 12 extra shifts that he willingly picked up to ensure patients continued receiving the support they deserve. He has even volunteered for double shifts on multiple occasions, demonstrating a level of commitment that goes far beyond expectations.

Yet, what makes David truly special isn't found in the numbers alone.

His willingness to help wherever needed has made him an invaluable member of our volunteer family and a trusted support to our staff.

Through his service, David reminds us that even the smallest acts of kindness can have a lasting impact. David embodies the true meaning of Hospice Impact Through Volunteering Excellence, and we are incredibly grateful for his servant heart and commitment to our mission.

He has been the kind of volunteer every organization hopes for and every team is grateful to have. So, help us celebrate David by leaving a congratulatory message in the comments below!

"She was the light in our dark time." 💜

Nominated by a family she cared for during one of life's most difficult moments, Melissa M. was recognized not only for her exceptional nursing care, but for the compassion and support she provided to the entire family.

Today, we are proud to celebrate Melissa, our Spring/Summer 2026 DAISY Award Winner! 🌼

As Melissa accepted her award, one of the most touching moments was seeing her parents, who traveled from out of town to celebrate alongside her. Watching them share in this special recognition and the impact their daughter has made on so many patients and families was truly heartwarming,

Thank you, Melissa, for bringing light, kindness, and comfort to those who need it most.

What Moves a Veteran? What Brings a Veteran to Tears? 💜

Is it the red, white, and blue? The American flag placed in their hands? The sight of fellow veterans standing together in respect? Or is it having a lifetime of service recognized?

Recently, Hospice of Wichita Falls had the privilege of honoring Jerry Harsh through our Salute to Service Ceremony, a special program that recognizes and thanks the local military veterans and first responders in our care.

As fellow veterans and Salute to Service volunteers gathered around him, the room grew quiet. Words of gratitude were shared, a beautiful poem was read (attached in the photos), veterans rendered a salute to one of their own, and the National Anthem filled the room.

As the music played, tears welled in Jerry's eyes.

Perhaps he was remembering his years as a United States Navy Radioman between 1967 to 1972, including service during Operation Team Spirit in Korea, and the five years that followed in the Army National Guard.

Or perhaps he was reflecting on a legacy much bigger than himself.

His father, Leland Ralph Harsh, served in the U.S. Army and earned a Purple Heart. Years later, Jerry answered the call. Then his daughter, Vanessa, continued that tradition through her service in the United States Air Force. Three generations. Three uniforms. One family's enduring legacy of service to our nation.

During the ceremony, Jerry received a veteran pin, a certificate of appreciation, heartfelt thank you card created by students at Sheppard AFB Elementary School, and a handmade patriotic quilt. But the most meaningful gift wasn't something he could hold. It was knowing that his service mattered, his sacrifices were remembered, and his story would not be forgotten.

The Salute to Service Program was initiated by Michele Houck in memory of her father, a proud Navy veteran. Today, that vision continues through dedicated volunteers who ensure veterans like Jerry receive the recognition and gratitude they have so richly earned.

At Hospice of Wichita Falls, our Salute to Service Ceremonies are about more than pins, certificates, quilts, and keepsakes. They are an opportunity to say what can never be said enough: Thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and the freedoms you helped protect.

And judging by the tears in Jerry's eyes, those words meant everything.

Some heroes never ask to be recognized. That's exactly why they deserve to be. 🇺🇸
