EMDR works.
Your brain files away most of what happens to you, which is why old memories feel like the past. But something painful can get stuck half-processed, like a tab that never closed, so it still feels like it is happening now. That is a lot of what anxiety and trauma really are.
EMDR helps the brain finish the job. While you hold the stuck memory in mind, we use gentle bilateral brain stimulation, a steady left-right rhythm, usually tapping your own shoulders or knees. That rhythm helps both sides of the brain work together and finally file the memory where it belongs.
It does not disappear. You just stop reliving it. ⠀
