As Pride Month begins, we want to recognize something we see every day in our work: many LGBTQ+ individuals come to therapy carrying experiences that go far beyond typical life stressors.

For some, it’s years of masking parts of themselves to feel safe. For others, it’s navigating family rejection, discrimination, identity exploration, religious trauma, minority stress, bullying, relationship challenges, or the exhaustion that comes from constantly having to explain and defend who they are.

Research consistently shows that LGBTQ+ individuals experience higher rates of anxiety, depression, trauma-related symptoms, and suicidal ideation compared to their cisgender and heterosexual peers. These disparities are not caused by LGBTQ+ identities themselves. They are linked to the social and environmental stressors many LGBTQ+ people face throughout their lives.

Affirming therapy is more than acceptance. It means understanding the unique experiences that shape LGBTQ+ mental health. It means recognizing how systems, relationships, and environments impact well-being. It means creating a space where clients don’t have to educate their therapist about their identity before they can begin healing.

Good therapy doesn’t assume. It listens.

Good therapy doesn’t pathologize. It validates and empowers.

Good therapy doesn’t ask people to fit into a box. It helps them build a life that aligns with who they truly are.

This Pride Month, we celebrate the LGBTQ+ community’s resilience, authenticity, and strength. We are honored to walk alongside our clients as they explore identity, process difficult experiences, strengthen relationships, and move toward lives that feel more connected, meaningful, and authentic.

Everyone deserves mental health care where they feel seen, respected, and understood.

Tonight! At 7pm on KFDX+, you can watch Ryan and I yap at Texoma with Tiffany on her newly created podcast called Let’s Sit with That. You can hear us talk about the testing process, executive functioning challenges, therapy with children, behavior modification, and probably some other random things. I can’t say we were super targeted or organized when we gave Tiffany talking points. We’re grade A talkers, particularly when we are passionate about a thing. Feel free to let us know your thoughts or leave us any questions you may want to hear us talk about in the future! 😊

We are pleased to announce that Megann Lee, LPA-IP, co-owner of Lee Therapy and Assessment, will be going out on maternity leave starting June 1st as she and Ryan Lee prepare to welcome their newest family member. This is a joyful milestone for our practice, and we appreciate your support during this time.

All current clients have been notified of Megann’s upcoming leave. While she is away, there will be a small waitlist for evaluation clients. If you are on the waitlist, you can expect to be contacted in mid-August to schedule your appointment as Megann returns to the office.

Lee Therapy and Assessment will continue to accept referrals for psychological and psychoeducational evaluations throughout this period. New referrals will be added to the waitlist and contacted as scheduling resumes.

Thank you for your understanding and patience as we celebrate this special occasion. Please reach out with any questions or concerns.

Not every graphic with percentages and “facts” about autism is accurate, evidence-based, or helpful to the autistic community.

We’re seeing more social media posts that present sweeping claims about autistic people as universal truths, often without sources, context, or nuance. While many are created with good intentions, misinformation can still cause harm.

Autistic people are not a monolith. Broad statements like:
• “70% of autistic people are LGBTQ+”
• “71% of autistic adults are unemployed”
• “Up to 80% meet criteria for ADHD”

may come from limited studies, specific samples, outdated research, or statistics taken out of context. When repeated without explanation, they can unintentionally reinforce stereotypes, fear, hopelessness, or the idea that autistic people are defined by deficits and statistics rather than individuality and humanity.

A few important reminders:
• Correlation is not identity.
• Research findings are not universal truths.
• Statistics should inform support, not define people.
• Autism research is still evolving, especially for women, BIPOC individuals, late-identified adults, and people with co-occurring conditions.

Educational content about autism should be:
✓ accurately sourced
✓ clinically responsible
✓ nuanced and contextualized
✓ respectful of autistic voices
✓ focused on support, understanding, and quality of life

Autistic individuals deserve better than viral infographics built on oversimplification. They deserve evidence-based care, acceptance, accommodations, and the freedom to exist beyond misleading “facts.”

Before sharing autism-related statistics online, take a moment to ask:
Where did this come from?
Who was studied?
What context is missing?
And most importantly… does this help autistic people, or just generate engagement?
