Purple Thursday is a national day of action observed during Domestic Violence Awareness Month (October) where people wear purple to show solidarity with survivors, honor victims, and raise awareness about ending domestic violence.

The Meaning of Purple: The color purple symbolizes survival, courage, and peace.

“And immediate financial charges are just the tip of the iceberg. There are also the costs of missed work or school, attorneys’ fees, mental health care, and follow-up doctor’s appointments. As the Trump administration continues to cut funding for federal anti-violence initiatives, sexual assault survivors will likely have to bear even more costs like these on their own while simultaneously processing the assault itself.”

The cost of sexual assault for Cornell University’s Jane Doe—and for countless others—is life-altering.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Domestic violence is a pattern of behavior used by an individual to establish and maintain power and control over their intimate partner.

The behavior includes abusive tactics, threats, and actions that may or may not rise to the level of criminal behavior. The tactics may include physical, emotional, financial, and/or sexual abuse.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Awareness is more than knowing what abuse is.

It’s understanding what healthy relationships can look like.

It’s recognizing when something doesn’t feel right.

It’s knowing that boundaries and consent matter.

And it’s making sure people know support is available.

For young people, these conversations matter — not just in October, but all year long.

The KBI released the 2025 Domestic Violence, Stalking, and Sexual Assault in Kansas report. 23,397 domestic violence, 1,007 r**e and 919 stalking incidents were reported in Kansas.
