🧠💡 “Wait… THAT Could Be ADHD?” — When the Diagnosis Comes Later in Life

For some people, ADHD isn't diagnosed in childhood.

It's discovered at 30. Or 40. Or 50. Or even later.

And suddenly, years of experiences can begin to make a little more sense.

The unfinished projects.
The forgotten appointments.
The constant mental clutter.
The procrastination followed by a frantic burst of productivity.
The feeling that everyone else received an instruction manual for adulthood…and somehow yours got lost in the mail. 😅

Adult ADHD doesn't always look like the stereotypical image of a hyperactive child.

It may look more like:

🧠 Walking into a room and forgetting why you're there
⏰ Constantly underestimating how long something will take
📱 Picking up your phone to do one thing and resurfacing 30 minutes later
📋 Making lists…and then losing the lists
💼 Being incredibly successful professionally while struggling to manage everyday tasks at home
🗣️ Interrupting, oversharing, or losing your train of thought mid-conversation
⚡ Functioning extremely well under pressure—but struggling when there isn't a deadline
😴 Feeling mentally exhausted from constantly trying to stay organized
💭 Wondering for years, “Why is this so much harder for me than it seems to be for everyone else?”

For adults who receive a diagnosis later in life, there can be a complicated mix of emotions.

Relief: There may actually be an explanation.

Validation: Maybe I wasn't simply lazy, careless, or unmotivated.

Grief: What might have been different if I had understood this earlier?

And sometimes even...

Rediscovery: Who am I when I stop judging myself for the way my brain works?

A diagnosis doesn't rewrite your past.

But understanding yourself differently can absolutely influence your future.

With appropriate support, adults with ADHD can develop strategies for executive functioning, organization, emotional regulation, relationships, communication, and the everyday demands of life—while also recognizing the strengths they may have carried all along.

At Adult, Child & Family Counseling (ACFC), we're here for mental health at every age and every stage.

Because you're never “too old” to better understand yourself.

And sometimes one of the most powerful moments in adulthood is realizing:

💙 There may have been a reason things felt so difficult—and you don't have to keep navigating them the same way.

🚨🧠 ATTENTION THERAPISTS: We Have a Very Serious Problem at ACFC…

**We keep growing.** 😏

More clients.
More services.
More incredible clinicians.
More laughter in the hallways.

And now we have another problem…

👉 **We need more amazing people to join us.**

So, if you're a clinician who:

✨ Actually loves what you do
💙 Wants to work somewhere your expertise is respected
🤝 Likes collaboration without the unnecessary workplace drama
🗓️ Appreciates flexibility and autonomy
🏡 Wouldn't mind a beautiful office to work from
😂 Enjoys coworkers who can discuss clinical theory AND laugh five minutes later
🌱 Wants to build, grow, and develop professionally
🧠 Believes exceptional mental health care starts with exceptional people…

**We should probably talk.**

ACFC isn't trying to build a team where everyone is the same.

Quite the opposite.

We want different personalities. Different specialties. Different experiences. Different approaches. **Different humans.**

Because the families we serve aren't all the same either.

For more than **40 years**, Adult, Child & Family Counseling has served the Wichita community—and we're still evolving, expanding, and asking:

**“What can we do even better?”**

Right now, part of that answer is finding **YOU.** 👀

So maybe you weren't looking for a change.

Maybe you were *kind of* looking. 😉

Or maybe this post just landed on your feed at a suspiciously convenient time.

Either way…

☕ **Come have a conversation with us.**

Worst-case scenario? You meet some pretty great people.

Best-case scenario?

**You find the place where you were supposed to practice all along.** 💙

💙 When Someone Finally Tells Their Story… How We Respond Matters.

For someone who has experienced trauma, saying the words out loud for the first time can require an extraordinary amount of courage.

Sometimes the experience happened months ago. Sometimes years—or even decades—have passed.

And sometimes the person has spent all that time wondering:

**“Will anyone believe me?”**
**“Will they look at me differently?”**
**“Was it somehow my fault?”**
**“Is my story too much for someone else to hear?”**

When a survivor finally chooses to speak, the response they receive matters.

Judgment can deepen shame.
Disbelief can reinforce silence.
Shock can make someone wish they had never spoken.

But being met with **compassion, patience, safety, and genuine human connection** can begin to create something very different.

🌿 *I hear you.*
💙 *What happened to you does not define who you are.*
🤝 *You don't have to explain everything today.*
🧠 *Your reactions to what happened deserve understanding, not judgment.*
❤️ *Your story is not too heavy.*

At **Adult, Child & Family Counseling (ACFC)**, we understand that trauma isn't simply about what happened. Its effects can influence relationships, trust, self-worth, emotional regulation, boundaries, and the way a person experiences safety long after an event has ended.

Therapy cannot erase the past.

But with the right therapeutic relationship, it can provide a safe and supportive space to **process what happened, understand its impact, develop healthier ways of coping, and begin separating who you are from what you survived.**

And that distinction matters tremendously:

**You are not your trauma.**

You are a whole person whose life, identity, value, and future extend far beyond the most painful chapters of your story.

If you've carried something silently because you've been afraid of what will happen when you finally say it out loud, you don't have to tell your entire story at once.

**You can begin when you're ready.**

**At ACFC, we're here to listen.**

💙☀️ Monday Doesn’t Have to Be Something You Survive.

**“Ugh… it’s Monday.”**

We say it. We joke about it. We make memes about it. 😅

But what if Monday didn’t have to arrive with an immediate sense of dread?

A new week can bring deadlines, school drop-offs, meetings, appointments, practices, bills, unanswered emails, laundry…and approximately 47 other things you suddenly remembered before your first cup of coffee. ☕😂

Before you try to conquer **the entire week today**, remember:

🌿 You only have to handle **today** today.
🧠 Everything does not deserve the same level of urgency.
💙 Rest is productive, too.
📱 That message can sometimes wait.
🤝 Asking for help is allowed.
✨ A difficult morning does not determine the rest of your week.

And if you consistently find yourself dreading Mondays—not because you simply prefer the weekend, but because life feels exhausting, overwhelming, or emotionally heavy—it may be worth paying attention to what your mind is trying to tell you.

Sometimes we don’t need to become better at **pushing through.**

Sometimes we need to become better at recognizing when something needs to **change.**

At **Adult, Child & Family Counseling (ACFC)**, our clinicians are here to help you work through the stress, relationships, anxiety, transitions, family dynamics, and everyday challenges that can make life feel heavier than it needs to.

So here's your Monday reminder from ACFC:

**You don't need a perfect week. You just need to take it one day at a time.** 💙

And maybe start with coffee. We fully support the coffee. ☕😉

🧠⏰ “I’M JUST BUSY.” But… Are You Okay?

Somewhere along the way, being **busy** became something we started wearing like a badge of honor.

“How are you?”
**Busy.**

“How’s life?”
**Crazy busy.**

“How have you been feeling?”
…Wait. When was the last time someone asked *that*? 💙

Between work, school, kids, practices, appointments, relationships, finances, notifications, errands, and the never-ending list of things that need our attention, it can become surprisingly easy to **function without actually feeling well.**

And sometimes what we call “busy” may also look like:

😴 Constant exhaustion—even after sleeping
😤 Becoming irritated over little things
📱 Needing constant distraction to avoid slowing down
🧠 Difficulty concentrating
❤️ Feeling disconnected from people you love
😔 Losing interest in things you normally enjoy
💭 Feeling guilty whenever you aren't being productive
🌙 Finally getting quiet at night…and suddenly your mind won't stop

Being productive and having a full life aren't bad things.

But **constantly operating in survival mode shouldn't become our definition of normal.**

Your body needs rest.
Your mind needs quiet.
Your relationships need presence.
And **you need space to simply be a person—not a productivity machine.**

Therapy can provide that space.

Not because your life has to be falling apart.

Sometimes therapy is simply the place where you finally get to put everything down for an hour and ask:

**“How am I really doing?”**

At **Adult, Child & Family Counseling (ACFC)**, our clinicians are here to help you navigate stress, relationships, family life, anxiety, transitions, emotional exhaustion, and all the complicated pieces that come with being human.

So here's your reminder from ACFC today:

💙 **A full calendar does not always mean a fulfilled life.**

Make room for your mental health, too.

💙✨ ACFC IS GROWING AGAIN — AND WE ARE SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS ONE! ✨💙

Please join us in welcoming **Linda Knoblauch, Addictions Counselor**, who will soon be joining the **Adult, Child & Family Counseling (ACFC)** team! 🎉

Linda brings valuable experience in **addiction counseling and grief support**, but her work extends far beyond either specialty. She has experience supporting individuals navigating grief, abuse, abandonment, self-esteem challenges, difficult life experiences, and many other concerns.

What Linda loves most about this work is something that aligns beautifully with the heart of ACFC: **getting to know the person—not simply the challenge that brought them to therapy.**

In Linda's own words:

> *“My greatest passion is working one-on-one with clients—learning about their past, understanding how they see their future, and witnessing those moments when everything ‘clicks’ for them.”*

Her approach recognizes that every person arrives with a different story, different experiences, and different goals for the future.

And that is exactly why we're so excited to have her joining ACFC. 💙

For more than four decades, ACFC has continued to evolve with the needs of our community. By bringing together professionals with different areas of expertise, backgrounds, and therapeutic perspectives, we're able to support more of the mental health needs affecting individuals and families throughout Wichita.

🌿 Addiction and recovery
💙 Grief and loss
🌱 Self-esteem and personal growth
🤝 Abandonment and relationship concerns
🧠 Difficult or traumatic life experiences
✨ And many of the challenges that come with simply being human

**Linda will begin seeing clients soon, and scheduling is opening now!**

If you think Linda may be the right fit for you or someone you love, **don't wait to get on her schedule.** We anticipate her openings filling quickly!

🎒🧠 BACK TO SCHOOL… BUT WHO’S ACTUALLY NERVOUS? 👀

New backpacks? ✅
School supplies? ✅
Schedules figured out? *Hopefully.* 😅
Everyone emotionally ready?

**Well… that's a different question.**

Back-to-school season can be exciting, but it can also bring a surprising amount of stress into a household—and **kids aren't the only ones feeling it.**

For children and teens, a new school year may mean worrying about:

📚 Academic expectations
👥 Making friends or fitting in
😟 Bullying or social pressures
🏫 A new school, teacher, or routine
⚽ Balancing activities and homework
📱 Social media and comparison
💭 Simply wondering, *“What if this year is hard?”*

And parents? We see you too. 💙

You're juggling transportation, practices, appointments, homework, work schedules, finances, lunches, forms, bedtime routines—and sometimes the emotional weight of watching your child struggle while trying to figure out **how much to help and when to let them grow.**

That's a lot for one family system to absorb at once.

So as school begins, don't just ask:

**“Do you have everything you need for school?”**

Try asking:

💬 “How are you feeling about going back?”
💬 “Is there anything you're worried about?”
💬 “What are you most excited about?”
💬 “What would make this transition easier for you?”

And parents—ask those questions of **yourself**, too.

At **Adult, Child & Family Counseling (ACFC)**, we work with children, teens, adults, couples, and families because mental health doesn't exist in isolation.

**When one member of the family is struggling, the whole family can feel it. And when one begins to heal, that can ripple outward too.** 💙

This school year, let's prepare more than backpacks.

🎒 Pack the pencils.
❤️ Make room for conversations.
🧠 And put mental health on the back-to-school checklist.

If your family could use some extra support, **ACFC is here for you.**

💙🤱 When We Care for Mothers, We Care for Families. 🤱💙

Every so often, a heartbreaking story involving a mother and her children captures national attention.

These tragedies remind us of an important truth:

**A mother's mental health matters—not only for her own well-being, but for the well-being of her entire family.**

Bringing a child into the world is often described as one of life's greatest joys.

But it can also bring:
💙 Physical exhaustion.
💙 Hormonal changes.
💙 Sleep deprivation.
💙 Anxiety.
💙 Depression.
💙 Feelings of isolation.
💙 Overwhelming pressure to "do it all."

For some mothers, these challenges can become much more serious. Conditions such as **postpartum depression** and the much rarer **postpartum psychosis** are real medical conditions that deserve immediate attention, compassionate treatment, and support.

These are **not character flaws.**
They are **treatable mental health conditions.**

Unfortunately, many mothers suffer in silence because they fear judgment, believe they should "just be happy," or worry they'll be seen as a bad parent if they admit they're struggling.

The truth is...

**Asking for help is one of the strongest things a parent can do.**

Mental health challenges don't just affect one person—they can impact marriages, children, extended families, friendships, and entire communities.

That's why early intervention matters.

Whether you're a brand-new mom, a mother of teenagers, an empty nester, or somewhere in between, your emotional well-being is just as important as your physical health.

At **Adult, Child & Family Counseling (ACFC)**, we believe every mother deserves a safe place to talk, heal, and receive support without fear of judgment.

Because when we support mothers...

We strengthen children.
We strengthen families.
We strengthen our communities.
