1. WHAT LED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN COUNSELING?

I have always been interested in relationships and what helps to make them function well and grow into healthy attachments. However, I had a great desire to be professionally trained to learn more about healthy relationships and especially how to help marriages be more stable with positive communication and greater commitment to work through challenges.

2. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING AS A PROFESSIONAL COUNSELOR/THERAPIST?

I have been working as a Marriage & Family Therapist for 23 years, with many more years of life experience.

3. WHAT DOES YOUR COUNSELING STYLE LOOK LIKE?

My counseling style is very relational and interested in knowing about my clients’ family of origin, life experiences, and current stresses and concerns. I often focus on areas of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well being. My approach involves practical tools that can be used to improve communication, manage anxiety, depression, grief, personal value, and life choices.

4. WHAT DO YOU HOPE CLIENTS WILL TAKE AWAY FROM EACH SESSION:

My hope for clients is that they will have a better understanding of themselves, their needs, their relationship patterns, and a desire to learn and grow as they develop meaningful goals for purposeful living.

1. WHAT LED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN COUNSELING?

I first worked as a middle and high school teacher before becoming a counselor, and throughout those experiences I found myself drawn to the relational side of the work. Some of the most meaningful moments in my career came from walking alongside students and their families as they navigated difficult seasons. Those experiences showed me the power of being heard, supported, and understood, and they inspired me to pursue professional counseling.

2. HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING AS A PROFESSIONAL COUNSELOR/THERAPIST?

I have worked as a high school counselor for the past three years, helping students navigate academic, personal, and emotional challenges.

3. WHAT DOES YOUR COUNSELING STYLE LOOK LIKE?

I believe therapy works best when clients feel safe, accepted, and genuinely understood. That's why I take an integrative approach, tailoring each session to meet the unique needs of the person sitting across from me rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach. My work is grounded in Person-Centered Therapy because I believe that healing begins with a trusting, authentic relationship.

4. WHAT DO YOU HOPE CLIENTS WILL TAKE AWAY FROM EACH SESSION:

I hope clients leave each session feeling heard, supported, and a little less alone. My goal is for clients to walk away with a renewed sense of hope, greater self-understanding, and confidence that meaningful change is possible. I want each session to feel like a step forward in their journey.

I have been working for 6 years and counting!

Get To Know Us:
Rachel Tomshack, LCPC

What led you to pursue a career in counseling?
Believe it or not, my childhood dream was to become a marine biologist! Life took me in a different direction, and I discovered I had a knack for understanding people and helping them solve problems. It turns out I'm much better with emotions than chemistry—and I've never looked back. Over the years, I've found counseling to be incredibly rewarding, and I love helping people recognize their strengths, work through challenges, and create meaningful change in their lives.

How long have you been working as a professional counselor/therapist?
I have been a licensed therapist since 2008. Throughout my career, I've worked in foster care, the county jail, and private practice, giving me experience with children, teens, adults, and families from many different walks of life. In 2011, I stepped away from full-time counseling to focus on family while continuing to volunteer and maintain my license. I joined Axiom Counseling Center in November and am excited to be back doing what I love.

What does your counseling style look like?
I believe therapy works best when clients feel comfortable enough to be themselves. My style is warm, down-to-earth, and collaborative. I want clients to feel like they're talking with someone who genuinely listens while also helping them make progress. I combine evidence-based approaches with practical strategies, tailoring each session to the individual because no two people—or their stories—are the same.

What do you hope clients will take away from each session?
My hope is that every client leaves feeling heard, supported, and more hopeful than when they walked in. Whether they gain a new coping skill, a different perspective, or simply feel a little less alone, I want each session to move them one step closer to the life they want to live.

What Is GROUP THERAPY?

Group therapy brings together people facing similar challenges in a safe, supportive environment led by a licensed therapist. It's a place to learn, grow, and discover new ways to navigate life's struggles.

You don't have to have all the answers. Sometimes the next step toward healing begins simply by showing up.

Join us for the next Axiom Academy as we discuss how group therapy helps people find hope, healing, and connection. Discover if a group might be right for you.

Change doesn’t always happen through big, dramatic moments. More often, it begins with small choices—getting out of bed, asking for help, setting a boundary, taking a walk, or choosing a healthier thought over a familiar negative one.

In behavioral and mental health, growth is rarely about perfection. It’s about progress. Every sunrise offers a fresh opportunity to learn, heal, and move one step closer to the life you want.

No matter what yesterday looked like, today is a new beginning.
