Healthy relationships aren’t built by people who never get it wrong. They’re built by people willing to take responsibility and repair when they do.
Sometimes that means saying, “I was wrong.” Sometimes it means accepting your partner’s repair without an “I told you so.”

It’s easy to fall for someone’s potential, especially when you really like them.
You start filling in the blanks: Maybe they’ll communicate more with time. Maybe they’ll become more consistent. Maybe they’ll eventually want the same future I do.
There’s nothing wrong with believing people can grow. But dating is also an opportunity to get curious about the person who is actually in front of you.
Listen to what they tell you about their values, needs, goals, and hopes. Pay attention to what their actions show you, too.
There’s plenty of room to grow together. First, make sure you like what’s already there.

You probably remember your first date. Your wedding. A favorite vacation. Maybe even the argument you wish you could forget.
But do you remember what happened three Tuesdays ago?
Probably not.
After 30 years of studying relationships, one thing we keep seeing is just how much the ordinary moments matter.
The check-ins. The affection. The questions. The moments you look up and really listen. They may not be the parts of a relationship we photograph, but they’re often the little pieces holding everything together.
For our upcoming 30th anniversary, we’re looking back at what’s changed in relationships, what hasn’t, and what relationship science keeps bringing us back to.

Ever walked away from an argument because you knew if you stayed, you were about to say something you'd regret? That's not always a bad thing.
A healthy 20 minute break isn't the same as giving your partner the silent treatment. One creates safety. The other creates distance.
Before you step away, say something like:
"I need 20 minutes. I'll come back. I just want to be in a better headspace so we can actually talk."
That one sentence can make all the difference.
The goal isn't to end the conversation. It's to come back as a partner who's actually able to have it.

Strong relationships aren't built by having all the answers. They're built by staying curious.
The questions we ask ourselves, and each other, can shape the way we show up in our relationships. They invite us to slow down, notice what's changed, and reconnect in meaningful ways.
If these questions made you pause, this month's Love Notes is the perfect next step.
Click the link in the comments to sign up for our free Love Notes newsletter and receive Relationship Microhabits, a practical guide filled with 10 simple, research-based ways to strengthen connection through everyday moments.

Your partner cannot hear your thoughts.
We know. Inconvenient.
That thing you appreciate about them. The quality you admire. The moment that made you feel grateful for your relationship. If it stays in your head, your partner never gets to hear it.
Many couples feel appreciation every day but forget to express it. A simple statement like "I appreciate you," "I admire that about you," or "I'm grateful for what you did" can help your partner feel seen, valued, and connected.
This month's free Love Map Lookout resource includes simple exercises and conversation starters designed to help couples strengthen connection through appreciation, curiosity, and understanding.

This International Kissing Day, we're here with a simple reminder from Gottman research: have a 6-second kiss.
That's it.
Send this post to your partner as a little nudge, take six intentional seconds to connect, and see what happens when you slow down long enough to focus on each other. Then come back and drop a 💙 if you've had your 6-second kiss today or plan to.
Let's see if we can help change those survey numbers, one kiss at a time.
