October is Depression Awareness Month - a time to raise awareness, share stories of hope, and remind those struggling with depression that they are not alone. ๐Ÿค—

NeuroStar Advanced TMS Therapy Patient Advocate Martha Rhodes knows firsthand how deeply depression can impact a life.

After completing her NeuroStar TMS treatment in 2010, Martha found that she could function at a normal activity level. But more importantly, she discovered a newfound value and affirmation that her life was truly worth living.

Because of her incredibly positive experience with NeuroStar TMS therapy, Martha published a book, 3,000 Pulses Later, a candid and inspiring account of how it is possible to reclaim your life from the powerful grip of depression.

If your current depression treatment isnโ€™t providing the relief you hoped for, Marthaโ€™s story may offer a helpful perspective on another treatment option. If youโ€™d like to read her full story, request a complimentary copy of 3,000 Pulses Later. https://neurostar.com/book-request/

The Caring Center of Wichita and NeuroStar Advanced TMS Therapy are dedicated to helping people understand TMS and determine whether it may be a treatment option for them.โ€‹

This October, help us spread awareness, challenge the stigma around depression, and encourage conversations that can make a difference.โ€‹

In Episode 5 of Justice Reinvestment, host Peter Ninemire sits down with former prosecutor Maggie McIntyre to answer one question: how can the justice system protect communities while giving people a meaningful opportunity to change? ๐Ÿค”

As a former Sedgwick County prosecutor, Maggie worked alongside Peter and his treatment team, as well as a multidisciplinary team that included the judiciary, public defenderโ€™s office, and probation to help launch the Sedgwick County Drug Court in 2008.

In this episode, Maggie shares how drug court changed her understanding of addiction, while Peter reflects on cases that raise difficult questions about punishment, recovery, and whether a sentence recognizes the progress someone has already made. What exactly is TMS? ๐Ÿค”โ€‹

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-drug, non-invasive treatment that uses targeted magnetic pulses to stimulate areas of the brain involved in mood regulation.*โ€‹

We've partnered with NeuroStar Advanced TMS Therapy to bring treatment at The Caring Center of Wichita. TMS therapy requires no anesthesia, and patients can return to their normal daily activities afterward.โ€‹

If antidepressants haven't provided the relief you were hoping for, NeuroStar TMS may be an option worth exploring. ๐Ÿ’œโ€‹Learn more: thecaringcenterofwichita.com/tms-therapy/

In Episode 3 of Justice Reinvestment, "Why Punishment Alone Doesn't Work," Peter of the Caring Center of Wichita welcomes social worker, educator, former law enforcement officer, and his good friend, Jennifer Mackey, for an in-depth conversation about how trauma, addiction, and mental health intersect with the criminal justice system.

Learn about Jennifer's personal journey of growing up in a home impacted by alcoholism and domestic violence, her transition from law enforcement into social work, and the experiences that reshaped her understanding of addiction as a brain disease rather than a moral failing. Together, Peter and Jennifer discuss why addressing the root causes of substance use, meeting people where they are, and emphasizing positive reinforcement over punishment can create better outcomes for individuals, families, and communities. ๐Ÿซถ

The episode also explores innovative school-based intervention programs that kept at-risk students engaged in education instead of pushing them out through punitive discipline. Despite promising results, these programs ultimately faced funding challenges. This highlights the need to rethink how communities invest in prevention, treatment, and recovery.

Whether youโ€™re interested in criminal justice reform, behavioral health, education, or addiction recovery, Episode 3 offers insights into how compassion, neuroscience, and evidence-based approaches can transform lives. "I have lived with severe depression for many years of my life, finding myself buried deeper and deeper in a sinking pit. I am a pro at masking, but it took every ounce of me and as soon as I got home, Iโ€™d collapse in couchlock (after pushing myself to take care of my son and my fur babies). I just finished my TMS treatments this past month and the results are unbelievable. My PHQ scores went from 28 to 5!! My symptoms are completely in remission. There were no adverse effects. If you are considering TMS, do it!!!! Having the mental and emotional energy to take my son and pups on a walk without pushing myself every step of the way internally is so freeing. Iโ€™m so grateful I took this step!! The Caring Center was also so easy to work with, helped me navigate my insurance pre-approval process, accept Care Credit for deductibles, and were extremely flexible in allowing me to come in on lunch breaks or after work. The best 18 minutes a day for 30 days Iโ€™ve ever invested in myself ๐ŸŒผ๐Ÿ’›๐ŸŒป"

Peter Ninemire sits down with fellow social worker and longtime friend, Jenny Hardin, to tackle the hard question at the heart of justice reinvestment - what does it actually take to help people change?

Drawing on Pete's 10 years inside federal prison and their 20+ years working in behavioral health, the two dig into why America's punitive model keeps failing, what Scandinavian countries are getting right, and how therapeutic communities and drug courts are quietly proving a better way is possible.

Tune in for an honest, hopeful conversation on reforming the system from the inside out on episode two of Justice Reinvestment!
