Earlier this month, a group of middle school students spent a week at our hospital as part of the Sentara Health Career Camp.

Campers got exposure to the many roles that support patient care, including hands-on experience with real clinical skills. Here's a look at our team guiding students through airway management techniques on medical mannequins.

When former operating room nurse Leora Brown saw an opportunity to make the workplace safer for surgical teams across Virginia, she stepped outside the OR and into the Virginia General Assembly to share her firsthand experience.

Surgical smoke is the airborne byproduct created when heat-generating surgical instruments are used during medical procedures. For decades, surgical teams have endured inhaling the lingering plume of chemicals. Now, thanks to the lobbying efforts of nurses like Leora, Virginia is the 17th state to require smoke evacuation systems in every operating room.

Leora's story is a reminder that the impact of nurses extends far beyond the bedside. Through Sentara's shared governance model, team members are empowered to speak up, share their expertise, and help shape the future of healthcare. We're proud to support nurses like Leora, whose advocacy is creating safer environments for colleagues across the Commonwealth.

These awards recognize hospitals in the top 10% nationally for patient safety and the top 15% for patient experience — and only 80 hospitals nationwide earned both honors!
