🔍💊 Behind the Counter Monday

One of the most rewarding parts of serving as a teaching site is watching the next generation of pharmacists learn to serve, educate, and inspire others.

Recently, one of our younger TPS family members spent some time with us at the pharmacy, and our APPE students from VCU and Howard didn’t miss a beat. They jumped right in, answering questions, sharing knowledge, and giving him a behind-the-scenes look at what happens in community pharmacy.

Moments like these remind us that mentorship has a ripple effect. We’re not just investing in today’s student pharmacists. We’re helping shape future healthcare professionals, leaders, and community servants.

Nothing brings us more joy than seeing the students we’re pouring into turn around and pour into the generations coming behind them. ❤️

Happy Father’s Day! 💙

Today, we celebrate the dads, fathers, grandfathers, bonus dads, uncles, mentors, coaches, and father figures who show up day after day with love, guidance, sacrifice, and strength.

A special shoutout to all of the fathers who lead by example, teach life’s lessons in the everyday moments, and help shape the next generation through their presence, patience, and commitment.

This Father’s Day, we’re especially grateful for the men who remind us that being a father is about so much more than providing. It’s about being present, building character, creating memories, and leaving a legacy.

From our TPS Pharmily to yours, we wish all the amazing dads out there a very Happy Father’s Day!

🖤❤️💚 Juneteenth 2026 💚❤️🖤

As we celebrate Juneteenth, we pause to honor the resilience, strength, and sacrifice of those who came before us. Their perseverance in the face of unimaginable adversity helped pave the way for opportunities that many of us enjoy today.

This year feels especially meaningful as we look back on a special memory from three years ago when Jacob was crowned Little Mr. Juneteenth 2023. What once felt like a proud moment in time has become a beautiful reminder of how quickly our children grow and how important it is to teach them the history, heritage, and values that helped shape who they are.

Watching Jacob continue to grow, learn, lead, and flourish is a full-circle reminder that Juneteenth is not only about reflecting on the past. It is also about investing in the future. It is about ensuring that the next generation understands the shoulders upon which they stand and the responsibility they have to continue building a better tomorrow.

Today, we celebrate freedom. We honor our ancestors. And we remain committed to preserving the legacy they fought so hard to create.

And while you’re celebrating, be sure to support The Village Initiative and attend our local Juneteenth celebration. Community events like these help keep our history alive, strengthen connections across generations, and ensure that the stories and sacrifices that brought us here are never forgotten.

Happy Juneteenth. ❤️💛💚🖤

This past week, I had the honor of being sworn in to serve on the Virginia Board of Pharmacy through a gubernatorial appointment by Governor Abigail Spanberger, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to give back to a profession that has given so much to me.

The day was especially meaningful because the Honorable Brian Smalls administered my oath of office. Years ago, before The Prescription Shoppe ever filled its first prescription, Judge Smalls was the attorney who helped Henry and me navigate the legal paperwork and processes required to open our business. To now stand before him as he administered the oath for this new chapter of service was truly a full-circle moment.

In many ways, it was a reminder of the power of community, relationships, and the long-term impact of people who invest in and believe in one another. What began as professional guidance years ago evolved into a moment that our family will never forget.

What made the occasion even more special was having our boys there to witness it all. Judge Smalls welcomed us into his chambers, shared insights about his work, and gave them a firsthand look at leadership, service, and excellence in action.

While I am grateful for the journey that brought me here, I am even more mindful of the responsibility ahead. I do not take this appointment lightly. It is both an honor and a privilege to serve the profession of pharmacy and the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and I am committed to doing so with integrity, humility, and purpose.

Here’s a candid shot of Jacob out on the court putting in the work.

Most weeks, he’s training four days a week, and what impresses us most isn’t just the physical effort. It’s the mental discipline. Every practice is an opportunity to learn, grow, and become the athlete he hopes to be. His coach challenges him, encourages him, pushes him outside of his comfort zone, and most importantly, holds him accountable.

The same principle applies to our health.

Whether you’re working to lower your A1C, improve your cholesterol, lose weight, lower your blood pressure, or simply build healthier habits, the results don’t always show up overnight. There are days when it feels like all the effort isn’t making a difference.

But growth happens in the consistency.

It’s the daily walk. The healthier meal choice. Taking your medications as prescribed. Showing up for the workout. Choosing to keep going even when progress feels slow.

Then one day, something clicks. What once felt difficult becomes routine. What once felt impossible becomes achievable.

Keep showing up. Keep putting in the work. The results may not come as quickly as you’d like, but consistency has a way of paying dividends over time.

After all, wellness isn’t about perfection. It’s about persistence. 💪🏽🎾

Vaccines aren’t just for kids. Staying up-to-date as an adult is one of the simplest ways to protect your health and the health of those around you.

And speaking of helping protect our community, today’s photo features one of our all-time favorite pharmacy students, Adam from Hampton University School of Pharmacy, getting some hands-on immunization experience during his rotation with us. We love giving our students opportunities to learn in real-world settings and build the skills they’ll carry throughout their careers.

Adam, we miss you already, bro! 😂 Wishing you continued success as you move forward in your pharmacy journey.

Need to check your vaccine status? Give us a call. We’d be happy to help determine which vaccines may be recommended for you.

Here’s a friendly reminder that The Prescription Shoppe will be closed on Friday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth.

If you have prescriptions that need to be picked up, medications that need to be refilled, or any healthcare needs that can’t wait until the following business day, we encourage you to plan ahead this week.

As a Black-owned independent community pharmacy, Juneteenth holds special significance for us. It is a day to reflect on freedom, honor the resilience of those who came before us, and celebrate the progress that has been made while continuing to work toward a brighter future.

Thank you for allowing us to serve you and for supporting small businesses like ours. We look forward to reopening and continuing to care for our community.

Please plan accordingly, and we wish everyone a safe and meaningful Juneteenth celebration. ❤️🖤💚💛

✂️🥹 Well, it’s definitely the end of an era…

About a month ago, Josh decided that he wanted to cut his hair, and once he made up his mind, there was no changing it. He was determined.

So after nearly nine years, yesterday, he got his very first real haircut. ❤️

As excited as he had been all week, I think once we actually got there and it became real, the emotions started to kick in. There may have been a few tears. Truthfully, there may have been a few from Mom, too. 😂

His hair had become a bit of a security blanket, and it’s been such a big part of who he’s been for so long. But we’re incredibly proud of him for sticking with his decision. And once he saw the finished product? His face absolutely lit up. He loves his new look, and we have to admit… he suddenly looks so much older.

So allow us to reintroduce him… Joshua A. Ranger! 😎✨

A special shout-out to Jimmy and Keisha Vaughan of Shear Genius Salon for making this milestone such a positive experience. They calmed his nerves, tag-teamed the haircut, and took such great care of him from start to finish. We couldn’t have asked for a better first haircut experience.

It's hard to believe it's already been a week since we participated in Matoaka Elementary School's Career Day, and honestly... we're still recovering. 😅😂 God bless our teachers!

All jokes aside, we had an absolute blast spending the day with the students. They were full of energy, incredibly inquisitive, and asked question after question about pharmacy, healthcare, and what it takes to become a pharmacist. Let's just say we all made sure to have our energy drinks nearby to keep up! ☕⚡

One of the things we love most about hosting pharmacy students is giving them opportunities to experience all aspects of the profession. Our current student team includes two students from VCU, one from Hampton University, and one from Howard University. They joined us for Career Day and had the chance to interact with students, answer questions, and represent the profession in a meaningful way.

Experiences like these remind us that pharmacy extends far beyond the pharmacy counter. Whether we're caring for patients, educating the community, mentoring future pharmacists, or inspiring the next generation, every interaction matters.

And as an added bonus, we even got to spend some time with our favorite Matoaka Cardinal while we were there! ❤️🐦

A huge thank you to Matoaka Elementary School for inviting us to participate. We had a wonderful time and are already looking forward to next year!
