Over a year and a half ago I posted a reel on Instagram that I was having a bad day so I decided to record, talking about the things I love about myself.
One of the things mentioned were my hands. I’ve such a fascination with them! They’ve been through so much and carried me through all of my passions. That’s the most important part.
I also love to look at my hands. People have always told me how beautiful my hands are (maybe I missed my calling as a hand model…channeling my inner George Costanza here). I agree though. They’re quite lovely. They’re also just like my momma’s (though she’d hate my finger tattoos) so I think of her every single time I look at my hands.
Fast forward to last week when I got an email from a Substack I subscribe to - my friend and brilliant writer, Lula Brown. The Substack wasn’t an essay this time, it was a poem/spoken word. I was delighted when I went to read it and noticed she recorded it as well. So I listened while I read. I simply adore it!
I was also reminded of the aforementioned reel I recorded because this poem is titled Things My Hands Have Done.
I immediately got to work. In my brain I was formulating. Then I started recording voice notes so I didn't forget. Before you know it, 40 minutes had passed…leading up to my very own “things my hands have done.”
As a witchy girlie, I can’t help but wonder how many people view their hands as magic wands.
But I know I do!
I hope my version does this concept justice. Thank you, Lula, for the inspiration!
And for everyone who's read this far, here’s your little nudge to give some thought to all of the joy, wonder, and beauty your hands have created and facilitated in life!
Link to my Substack's in bio if you'd like to read this as well as my other newsletters and essays! 😊💖
