Do memorial services have to happen right away?

Not necessarily.

While services were once commonly held within just a few days of a death, many families today choose to wait weeks, or even months before gathering to celebrate a loved one's life.

There are many reasons for this. Family members may need time to travel from across the country, schedules may need to be coordinated, weather can affect travel plans, or families may simply want more time to thoughtfully plan a meaningful tribute.

What matters most isn't when a memorial service takes place. What matters is creating an opportunity for family and friends to come together, share memories, and honor a life well lived.

Serving families is always at the heart of what we do. Yesterday's quarterly business meeting brought together team members from across our chapels to learn, collaborate, and continue strengthening the care we provide.

We are proud to represent Williamston as part of this remarkable team.

Behind every service, every phone call, every arrangement conference, and every family we have the privilege to serve is a team of caring professionals dedicated to making a difficult time a little easier.

Yesterday, team members from across our chapels gathered at our Lansing Chapel for our quarterly business meeting. While we're missing a few familiar faces, we're grateful for the opportunity to learn together, support one another, and continue our commitment to serving Mid-Michigan families with compassion and care.

At first glance, this 1930 advertisement looks like a simple furniture store ad.

But it tells a much bigger story.

The ad was placed by Gorsline Brothers, operated by Claude and Ray Gorsline, whose family roots in the Williamston area stretched back generations. By the time this advertisement appeared, the Gorsline name had already been connected to Ingham County for more than a century.

Like many funeral directors of the era, the Gorslines operated both a furniture business and an undertaking establishment. In fact, Floyd A. Gorsline purchased the Williamston furniture and undertaking business in 1903, laying the foundation for what would become a lasting family legacy in funeral service.

The Gorslines' influence extended beyond funeral service. Historical accounts note that family members operated Williamston's first Ford agency, installed the village's first gasoline pump, served as community leaders, and were well-known throughout the region.

What began as a local furniture and undertaking business eventually grew into a name that remains familiar to many families throughout Mid-Michigan today.

There are phone calls to make, decisions to consider, and emotions that are often difficult to put into words.

One of the most important things we can offer families in those moments is reassurance. Even if arrangements have not been finalized, or a family is still deciding what feels right for them, we are able to help with immediate transportation and guidance through those first next steps.
