Earth month is more than just the month of April to me as it's a lifestyle to be lived all year round. With simple changes that sometimes aren't always the most convenient to maybe paying a few cents or a few dollars more for more sustainable practices that companies provide can make a difference if millions of people are participating.
One thing I love about Aveda is their plant based based aromas. When I attended an Aveda Institute at age 19, the policy was no outside perfumes worn during school & I haven't gone back to them since.
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in the air have become the new second hand smoke. We have the research of their harmful effects being endocrine disruptors, contributing to cancer & damaging our kidneys, liver & nervous system.
So why are people still using them that then affects our environment? Is it because the aisles of main stores are loaded with products that continue to be produced with more scented items and people don't think twice about using them?
What can we do differently & how can we raise awareness to the public?
When you book that Air BNB, request that all glade plug ins be removed before stepping into the place. Ask if their sheets & towels are laundered in unscented detergent.
Tell your doctor's office that the air freshener in the office or bathroom is just unnecessary.
Let your Uber driver know that the little tree hanging from the rear view mirror could be replaced with something more natural or eliminated entirely as some people are very sensitive to fragrances.
Switch to cleaning products without hidden fragrances, or use vinegar, hydrogen peroxide & baking soda. Herbal smudges, essential oil based diffusers & home made room sprays can refresh. I hope this post inspires you to think a little deeper on every day used products & to make a few switches to care for others around you, yourself & our planet 🌎
