We hear parents say things like:
“My child is so emotional.”
“They go from 0 to 100 so fast.”
“They can’t seem to settle down.”
“They melt down over everything.”
And while behavior is often what gets our attention, behavior is only part of the story. A regulated nervous system doesn’t mean a child never cries, never gets frustrated, or never has a hard day. A regulated nervous system looks like a child who can experience life’s challenges and eventually return to a place of calm, connection, and balance.
It looks like:
✨ Big feelings without staying stuck in them
✨ The ability to recover after disappointment
✨ Curiosity and engagement with the world around them
✨ More restful sleep
✨ Better adaptability during transitions and changes
✨ The ability to play, learn, connect, and grow
Children are constantly taking in information from their environment. School, activities, schedules, social interactions, growth spurts, illnesses, and everyday stressors all place demands on their developing nervous systems.
When those demands begin to outweigh their capacity to adapt, we often see it show up through behavior, sleep, focus, emotions, and overall regulation. That’s why at Compass, we don’t focus solely on symptoms or behaviors. We focus on the nervous system. Because when the nervous system is functioning well, children are better able to adapt, regulate, connect, and thrive.
The goal isn’t perfect behavior, it’s resilience.
❤️ Parents: what’s one thing you’ve noticed helps your child feel calm, connected, and regulated?
