EMDR with kids might look a little different than you expect!

Bilateral stimulation is an important part of EMDR, and with kids, we get creative. šŸ§ šŸ’›

You might see us using:ā€ØšŸŽØ Finger paintingā€ØšŸ¤¹ Bean bag tossā€Øāš–ļø Wobble boardsā€ØšŸ§ø Puppetsā€ØšŸ‘ butterfly tapping
…and plenty of other play-based activities!

These activities engage both sides of the body while helping kids work through difficult experiences, emotions, and memories in a way that feels developmentally appropriate (and often a whole lot more fun than sitting still and talking!).

At PLIM, Bree, Lauren, MK, Mackenzie, Lisa, Kelly & Cassie all offer EMDR services to help children & teend process trauma and other distressing experiences.

Because therapy for kids should look like… well, therapy for kids. 🫶

POV: You’re trying to teach littles healthy coping skills but first you have to survive the logic 🤣

Sometimes therapy is deep breathing, grounding and emotional regulation, and sometimes it’s realizing you’ve been absolutely out-argued by a 4-year-old. All in a days work.

I decided to tackle what may be the world’s most impossible project this week... sorting the LEGOs in our playroom at home.

As I sat there, I noticed myself thinking, ā€œOkay, I finally found all the blue ones. Time to move on.ā€ Except I actually hadn’t.

Every time I thought I had finished one color, I’d spot another blue brick hiding under a different pile. Then another. And another.

In true child therapist meets mom mode fashion, it made me think about parenting.

So often we think, ā€œOnce we get through this sleep regression...ā€ or ā€œOnce we figure out these meltdowns...ā€ or ā€œOnce we survive middle school...ā€ then things will finally feel easier. But parenting doesn’t really work that way.

Just when you feel like you’ve found all the ā€œblue LEGOs,ā€ another one appears. A new developmental stage. A new challenge. A new question. A new opportunity to help your child grow.

Sometimes that can feel discouraging. Like you’re working so hard but never actually getting to the end.

But I really think the goal was never to finish the pile.

I think instead the goal is simply to keep showing up with intention & curiosity.

To keep sorting.
To keep learning.
To keep advocating.
To keep repairing after the hard moments.
To keep celebrating the little wins.
To keep reminding ourselves that growth, for both us and our children, isn’t linear.

The pile gets smaller some days. Bigger on others. But every piece you sort matters.

So if parenting (especially in the middle of summer) feels overwhelming today, give yourself some grace. You don’t have to have it all figured out. You just have to keep picking up the next piece.

Because parenting isn’t about reaching the finish line; it’s about building something beautiful along the way. ā¤ļø

When kiddo is 100% cheating in Exploding Kittens but you remember you’re supposed to be modeling emotional regulation and not launching the cards across the room 🤣

Play therapy is basically: ā€œuse your coping skillsā€ while internally screaming ā€œTHAT CARD WAS NOT IN YOUR HAND A SECOND AGO.ā€ šŸ˜‚

Beans is ONE!!! šŸŽ‰

From tiny puppy chaos to certified good boy (with just a little mischief still sprinkled in 🤣), Beans has brought so much joy, laughter, and snuggles to our team and clients since he joined the PLIM family.

He’s been working hard on his therapy dog-in-training skills & will be starting the official AAT certification process next month now that he’s old enough.

We love you, Beans!! Help us wish the best boy a very happy 1st birthday! 🄳

Therapy doesn’t always look like talking! Sometimes it looks like learning how to handle a Draw 4 without melting down.

Even though we get to have a little fun, behind the game is real work:

āœ” handling frustration
āœ” adapting to change
āœ” staying regulated when things feel unfair

Learning to stay calm when things don’t go your way = one of the most important skills we teach ā¤ļø
