Aging can bring unexpected changes to our bodies, relationships, careers, and even our sense of self.

One of the coping skills Robin often shares is the wisdom of the Serenity Prayer: accepting what we can’t control, finding the courage to change what we can, and knowing the difference.

If you’re navigating a life transition or struggling with the changes that come with aging, you don’t have to do it alone. Robin is here to help 🤍

One of the biggest misconceptions about EMDR? That you immediately dive into your trauma.

In reality, your therapist spends time helping you feel safe, prepared, and supported before processing begins. Building trust and coping skills isn’t a delay but an essential part of the healing.

A strong foundation leads to better healing.

Welcome back to the final phase in our EMDR series!

At the beginning of your next session, your therapist will check in on how you've been since your last appointment, including any new insights, emotions, triggers, dreams, or changes you've noticed. Together, you'll revisit the target memory to see whether any distress remains and determine whether additional reprocessing is needed.

If the memory is no longer distressing, you'll move on to addressing present-day situations that still trigger similar feelings or continue processing another related memory within the same memory network.

Check out this simple, easy-to-understand video by Dr. Dan Siegel explaining basic brain anatomy.

EMDR is often described as a "bottom-up" approach to healing because it helps access and process experiences involving emotional, sensory, and body-based memory networks, not just thinking or talking through them. This can be especially helpful when traumatic experiences are difficult to fully resolve through insight alone.

Welcome back to the Phases of EMDR!

Phase 7 is all about closure. Before you leave each session, your therapist will help you feel calm, grounded, and present using the coping resources you built in Phase 2.

It’s also normal for processing to continue between sessions, just notice what comes up and bring it back to your next appointment.

Welcome back to the Phases of EMDR!

Phase 6 is our Body Scan. Once the distress is gone and the positive belief feels completely true, your therapist will guide you in scanning your body from head to toe while thinking about the target memory. If there’s any tension that remains, you’ll continue with the dual attention stimulation until it clears. When both your mind and body feel free of distress, the target is considered fully processed.

Welcome back to the phases of EMDR!

Phase 5 = Installation

During Phase 5, we strengthen the positive belief identified earlier in the process. We are ready for this phase when the target memory no longer carries emotional distress.

We begin by checking whether the positive belief chosen in Phase 3 still feels like the best fit. If needed, we can adjust the wording so it feels more authentic and meaningful to you. The positive belief is then paired with the target memory while continuing dual attention stimulation. This process helps the new perspective become more deeply integrated until it feels completely true and fully connected to the memory.

Examples of positive beliefs might include: I am enough, I am safe now, I can handle this, or I am worthy of love and connection.
