Juneteenth is a day of remembrance, reflection, and celebration.

It marks the day when the last enslaved African Americans in the United States learned of their freedom—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. It is both a celebration of resilience and freedom, and a reminder that justice delayed has lasting impact.

At our practice, we believe every child deserves to grow up feeling seen, valued, safe, and free to be exactly who they are. We also believe that learning, listening, and honoring the stories that have shaped our communities is part of caring well for one another.

Today we honor the history, strength, culture, and contributions of Black Americans.

❤️🖤💚 Happy Juneteenth.

Hesed Counseling is sooooo excited to announce.....WE HAVE A MALE THERAPIST!!! Please help us welcome Jason Myers to our team!!!

Jason will be joining us as a part-time clinician offering "after hours" to help working fathers get the mental health help they are seeking.

Jason received his Bachelor’s of Arts in Social Work from the University of North Carolina Wilmington and his Master’s in Counseling from Webster University. Jason has spent over two decades leaning into the messy, beautiful, and complex parts of the human experience. Since 2003, his work in mental health has taken him into almost every corner of the field from the intense, round-the-clock care at PRTFs and group homes, to sitting with families in their living rooms for community-based support. He has also worked in domestic violence centers, with the unhoused population, as well as foster care and adoptions.

Whether Jason is working with an individual navigating personal hurdles, a couple trying to find their way back to each other, or supervising the next generation of therapists, his approach remains the same: rooted in Faith, believing in grace, proven evidence-based practices.

Jason describes himself as: Imperfect follower of Jesus. Loyal and annoying husband. Father of two boys, making me thankful for grace. Absolute nerd.

Professional interests: Fathers; husbands; couples; teenagers; depression/self-esteem; identity work; faith-based counseling; and Individuals looking for LCMHC-A Supervision.

Statistics don't tell the whole story—but they tell us enough to know something needs to change.

💙 **1 in 4 men** will experience a mental health condition.
💙 Men are **4 times more likely** than women to die by su***de.
💙 **6 million men** experience depression each year in the United States.
💙 Yet men are significantly less likely to seek professional mental health treatment.

Behind every statistic is a father, husband, brother, son, friend, coworker, or neighbor who may be carrying more than anyone realizes.

For generations, many men have been taught to "tough it out," stay silent, or believe asking for help is a sign of weakness. The truth is exactly the opposite.

Real strength isn't pretending you're okay.
Real strength is having the courage to say, *"I'm not okay."*
Healing begins when silence ends.

This Men's Mental Health Awareness Month, let's normalize conversations about anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and therapy. You don't have to carry it all alone.

If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available.
📞 Call or text **988** to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline 24/7.
💬 You can also chat online at the 988 Lifeline.
If there is immediate danger or a life-threatening emergency, call **911** or go to your nearest emergency department.

You matter. Your story matters. And asking for help is never something to be ashamed of. 💙

"Man up."

For generations, those two words have been used to tell boys and men to hide their feelings, suppress their pain, and carry their struggles alone.

But strength isn't silence.

Strength is asking for help when you need it.
Strength is talking about what you're carrying.
Strength is letting someone in.
Strength is saying, "I'm not okay" when you're not okay.

This Men's Mental Health Awareness Month, let's replace the message "man up" with a healthier one:

🗣️ Speak up.

Your emotions are valid.
Your struggles matter.
Your story deserves to be heard.

Because real strength isn't found in suffering alone. It's found in having the courage to reach out.

As many of our clients are finishing up their final week of school, this includes final exams such as EOG's and EOC's. 📝

This can be a very stressful, and anxiety-provoking time for many students. Below are some simple phrases you can use to encourage your child and show your love and support.

🎯 "Practice Makes Progress": Encourage your child by reminding them that every bit of practice they do helps them improve. Celebrate their efforts and progress, no matter how small.

✏️ "It's Okay to Make Mistakes": Let your child know that making mistakes is a normal part of learning. Encourage them to view mistakes as opportunities to grow and learn, rather than setbacks.

😴 "Resting is Not Something to Be Earned": Emphasize the importance of taking breaks and resting. Explain that rest is vital for their well-being and can help them perform better. Encourage them to balance study time with relaxation.

🥊 "I Can Do Hard Things": Remind your child of their ability to tackle challenges. Encourage them to believe in themselves and trust their capabilities. Reinforce the idea that they have the strength to face difficult tasks.

🫂 By using these messages, parents can create a supportive and positive environment that helps children feel confident and motivated during finals.

🧠✨ A healthy mind blossoms with care. ✨🌱

Just like the flowers growing in our latest graphic, our minds need the right environment, patience, and specific care to truly bloom. For neurodivergent children, teens, and young adults, "care" isn't one-size-fits-all. It means understanding how your unique brain works!

To celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month, let’s look at the 5 C’s of Mental Health through a neuro-affirming lens:

1️⃣ Connection
👥Finding your tribe matters. Connection means being around people who accept your authentic self, respect your boundaries, and celebrate your unique interests without masking.

2️⃣ Communication
💬There is no single "right" way to communicate. Whether you use speech, AAC devices, sign language, texting, or body language, expressing your needs, boundaries, and feelings is essential for mental wellness.

3️⃣ Coping
🎨What helps you regulate? Healthy coping mechanisms can look like stimming, using noise-canceling headphones, taking sensory breaks, creating art, or unmasking in a safe space.

4️⃣ Contribution 🌟
Sharing your unique strengths, deep passions, and hyperfixations brings immense value to the world. Feeling heard and valued boosts self-worth.

5️⃣ Control 🧭The world can feel overwhelming and unpredictable. Focus on what you can control—like your sensory environment, your daily routine, and saying "no" when your social battery is drained.

Your mind is a beautiful garden. Give it the specific care, kindness, and accommodation it needs to blossom at its own pace. 💚

🛑 NEED IMMEDIATE SUPPORT? If you or a loved one are overwhelmed, struggling, or in crisis, free and confidential help is available 24/7:

Prior to the DSM-V, Asperger’s used to be a separate diagnoses from Autism. This change is part of a shift to recognize Autism as a range of neurological differences. We recognize that how an individual chooses to identify with their neurotype is a personal choice and respect their chosen language.

So, whether you use the term "Autistic", "Aspie", or just want to use the umbrella term of "neurodiverse" or "neurospicy" it is completely up to you! But what we do want you to know is no matter how you identify, there are parts of your diagnosis that make you unique.

At Hesed Counseling, we work with clients and families to better understand their diagnosis and feel empowered to embrace parts of them which may have previously led them to feel shame, guilt, or even being bullied. Instead, we focus on a strengths-based approach in which we work on self-esteem, self-worth, and value. Allowing for us to get to a place where we can MARVEL our Autism.

Marvel (v): to be filled with admiration and surprise.

Changing our mindset from an awareness to acceptance requires consistent intentionality of the heart to want to allow Autistic individuals to feel seen, heard, understood, and accepted. How are you already practicing some of these mindset shifts? What areas might there be room for growth?
