Elderhaus

Elderhaus Elderhaus was the first PACE (Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly) in North Carolina.

Elderhaus PACE is a complete health care program that offers a more personal way of getting health care. PACE is based upon the successful long-term care model in San Francisco known as On Lok. This program was developed as a special health plan for senior citizens. Older people often have medical problems that last for long periods of time. This health plan will arrange for doctors, nurses or oth

er specially trained people to help with these problems. It gives Elderhaus PACE participants a place to go to receive care. Elderhaus PACE includes Elderhaus at the Lake, an Adult Day Center and Elderhaus at the Canterbury Center.

πŸ’ͺ Happy Labor Day! As we mark the unofficial end of summer, we also honor the work and contributions laborers have made to the development and achievements of the United States. Thanks to them, we have safer, healthier, and better balanced working conditions.

Today, we applaud the benefits and circumstances of our own jobs that these early workers fought for and made possible. While you enjoy a cookout, vacation, or couch time, celebrate the good work that you do as well! πŸŽ‰

🍫πŸ₯œ Our Traveling Cooking Class Made a Sweet Stop in Ohio! πŸ₯œπŸ«

This month, Elderhaus participants packed their imaginations and traveled to the Buckeye State during our traveling cooking class with Dietitian Jen!

The destination? Ohio, home of the famous Buckeye candy. Participants rolled up their sleeves and became candy makers for the day, creating this beloved sweet treat from scratch.

The class began with measuring and mixing peanut butter, margarine, vanilla, and confectioners' sugar to form the dough. Once everything was blended together, participants carefully rolled the mixture into bite-sized balls and placed them in the freezer to chill. Afterward, each Buckeye was dipped in rich melted chocolate, leaving the signature peanut butter "eye" peeking through before returning to chill one final time.

The best part? Enjoying their homemade creations while playing a lively game of bingo with friends!

Along the way, participants also learned a fun piece of Ohio trivia: a buckeye is actually the nut of the buckeye tree, which inspired the candy's unique appearance.

From measuring and mixing to learning and tasting, this month's cooking class was the perfect combination of hands-on fun, friendship, and delicious treats. We can't wait to see where our culinary travels take us next!

Recently, a group of Elderhaus participants enjoyed a wonderful outing to Cracker Barrel, joined by our Transportation team, Recreation Therapy staff, and Social Work interns.

From warm biscuits and country-fried steak to sweet desserts and plenty of good conversation, everyone enjoyed a relaxing afternoon filled with great food and even better company. These community outings are more than just a meal away from the center. They provide opportunities for social connection, independence, new experiences, and meaningful memories with friends.

The smiles around the table said it all! 😊

A special thank-you to our staff, interns, and transportation team who help make these outings possible. We love creating opportunities for our participants to stay connected, engaged, and active in the community.

πŸ•οΈπŸ”₯ A Day of Camping Fun at Elderhaus! πŸ”₯πŸ•οΈ

Last week, our participants traded the comfort of the center for the spirit of the great outdoors during a special Camping Theme Day at Elderhaus!

Our Recreational Therapist, Heather Muncie, kicked off the adventure by inviting participants to gather beneath a blanket "tent" where, by flashlight, she shared a hilarious campfire story that had everyone smiling and laughing along.

The fun continued with camping-themed word searches and adult coloring pages that challenged creativity and sparked plenty of conversation. Participants enjoyed reminiscing about past camping trips and sharing favorite outdoor memories with friends.

After lunch, we wrapped up our camping adventure with a classic campfire favorite... delicious s'mores! 🍫πŸ”₯πŸͺ

From the laughter under the "tent" to the sweet treats at the end of the day, it was an afternoon filled with fun, friendship, and unforgettable memories.

Who says you have to leave Elderhaus to enjoy a camping trip? 🌲😊

πŸ“šπŸ—ΊοΈ A Journey Through History at Elderhaus! πŸ—ΊοΈπŸ“š

The other day, we welcomed back our wonderful volunteer, Peter, for another engaging and educational presentation with our participants.

This time, Peter took us on an incredible journey through the story of the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery Expedition, sharing fascinating insights about Napoleon Bonaparte, Thomas Jefferson, the Louisiana Purchase, Lewis and Clark, and Sacagawea's vital role in the expedition's success.

Our participants were fully engaged, asking thoughtful questions and contributing to lively discussions throughout the presentation. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn, reminisce, and explore one of the most remarkable adventures in American history together.

A heartfelt thank-you to Peter for sharing his knowledge, passion, and time with us. We always enjoy learning something new and look forward to his next visit!

We had an incredible day trip to Surf City to visit the The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Center! 🐒🐒

Our participants and Elderhaus staff enjoyed an informative tour where we learned about the center's inspiring beginnings and discovered some fascinating sea turtle facts. Did you know that sea turtles often return to the very beach where they were born when they are around 35 years old to mate and lay their eggs? Through genetic testing, researchers have found that generations of sea turtles continue to nest in the same locations year after year.

One of the highlights of our visit was seeing the rehabilitation area, affectionately known as "Turtle Bay," where recovering turtles receive specialized care. We even got to meet some of the residents, including Lichen, Lennie, Banana Pudding, Γ‰clair, and Snickerdoodle!

It was a wonderful afternoon filled with learning, laughter, and appreciation for these amazing creatures. πŸ’™

Our participants had a wonderful time creating adorable sea life trinket boxes during Craft Time!

Using colorful ocean-themed stickers, everyone was able to easily assemble and personalize their own keepsake box. What made the activity even more special was the kindness shown throughout the room. Participants happily helped their neighbors complete their projects and even created boxes for friends who were enjoying other Elderhaus activities and couldn't attend.

After the crafting was finished, the fun continued as everyone shared what treasures they planned to keep in their new boxes. From earrings and jewelry to seashells, loose change, and other special mementos, there were plenty of creative ideas and lots of laughter along the way.

Activities like these are about more than crafts. They encourage creativity, spark conversation, build connections, and showcase the caring spirit that makes Elderhaus such a special place.

πŸ“š A New History Program Comes to Elderhaus! πŸ“š

We were excited to welcome a new volunteer, Peter, to Elderhaus as he launched a fascinating history education series called "Peter Presents."

For his first presentation, Peter shared the story of President Andrew Jackson and the Trail of Tears, sparking thoughtful discussion and learning among our participants. We learned that Jackson was the 7th President of the United States and was often referred to as a "man of the people." Peter also explained how both North Carolina and South Carolina claim Jackson as a native son, as it is believed he was born near the border of the two states.

Participants explored the historical events that shaped this period, including how the discovery of gold in Georgia and Eli Whitney's invention of the cotton gin increased demand for land and contributed to the forced removal of Native American tribes from their ancestral homelands.

One of the highlights of the program was Peter's impressive display of authentic arrowheads, which gave participants a hands-on connection to the history being discussed.

The presentation was both educational and engaging, and our participants thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to learn something new. We are grateful to Peter for sharing his knowledge and passion for history, and we look forward to many more installments of "Peter Presents!" πŸ“–βœ¨πŸ’™
