⏰ What happens when independent practices can’t maintain their current staffing levels?

Patients wait.

Proposed federal Medicare changes for 2027 include deep payment cuts that could make it harder for independent medical practices to maintain the staffing needed to provide timely, specialized care.

For patients, that could mean:

➡️ Longer waits for appointments
➡️ Longer waits for specialized procedures
➡️ Less face-to-face time with your surgeon
➡️ Fewer opportunities for same-day care

At Delaware Orthopaedic Specialists, we believe access to high-quality orthopedic care should be about what patients need — not what a reimbursement formula allows.

These proposed changes could directly affect how quickly Medicare patients receive care.

Fellowship-trained? ✅
Delivers expert care focused on one specialty? ✅✅

That’s the model of our team at Delaware Orthopaedic Specialists — specialists only, delivering high-quality, expert care.

We’re excited to add another specialist to our team here at DOS! 👋 Please join us in welcoming Dr. Michael J. Reynolds, MD, a fellowship-trained shoulder and elbow surgeon.

Dr. Reynolds treats the full range of shoulder and elbow conditions, from rotator cuff tears, arthritis and instability to fractures and complex elbow injuries. He believes in exhausting conservative, non-surgical options first and reserving surgery for patients who will truly benefit from it.

When surgery is needed, Dr. Reynolds performs the full spectrum of shoulder and elbow procedures, from arthroscopy to complex joint replacement, and has experience with advanced technology including 3D preoperative planning, robotics and augmented reality navigation.

His goal is simple: help every patient get back to the activities and quality of life they enjoy. We’re thrilled to have Dr. Reynolds joining the DOS team and look forward to welcoming him as he begins seeing patients and providing specialized shoulder and elbow care in our community.

🗣️ Your access to same-day care could be at risk.

When you’re in pain, you shouldn’t have to wait days or weeks for relief — or make a second trip to the doctor just to receive routine treatment.

A proposed federal Medicare rule could cut payments for certain same-day services by 50%. For independent practices like Delaware Orthopaedic Specialists, these cuts could make convenient, same-day care financially unsustainable.

That could mean:
➡️ More appointments instead of one convenient visit
➡️ More travel for patients
➡️ Additional copays
➡️ Longer waits for treatment

Something as routine as a cortisone injection could potentially require a separate appointment — simply because of how the proposed rule would reimburse care.

Convenient care shouldn’t be penalized. Patients shouldn’t have to pay the price.

🕊️ Remembering Tommy John - a name that changed baseball and sports medicine forever.

Today, we mourn the passing of Tommy John, the legendary Major League Baseball pitcher whose name became synonymous with one of the most transformative procedures in sports medicine.

Tommy John won 288 games over a 26-year MLB career, was a four-time All-Star, and pitched professionally from 1963–1989. But his greatest legacy may be the one that lives on in athletes around the world.

In 1974, after tearing the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his pitching elbow, John underwent a groundbreaking reconstruction performed by Dr. Frank Jobe. At the time, the procedure was considered experimental. John became the first pitcher to successfully return to Major League Baseball following UCL reconstruction — and went on to win 164 games after surgery, more than the 124 he won before it.💪

Today, what became known as “Tommy John surgery” has become an important part of baseball and sports medicine. In 2024, approximately 35% of MLB pitchers had undergone Tommy John surgery at some point in their careers.

Research has also shown that UCL reconstruction can provide a strong path back to professional baseball, with one study finding that 83% of MLB pitchers returned to the major leagues following surgery.

At Delaware Orthopaedic Specialists, we are proud to have multiple fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons who perform UCL reconstruction/Tommy John surgery, helping athletes navigate these complex injuries and work toward a safe return to the sport they love.

Tommy John’s name will forever represent more than a surgery. It represents innovation, perseverance, and the belief that an injury doesn’t have to mean the end of an athlete’s career.

We extend our condolences to Tommy John’s family, friends, teammates, and the countless athletes whose careers were changed because of his remarkable story.

Rest in peace, Tommy. Your legacy will continue on every time an athlete takes the field again. ⚾️

What an AMAZING night! 🥥⚾️🎉

We were thrilled to treat our team and their families to one of the hottest tickets of the summer — Banana Ball! 🍌⚾️

Our crew took over the Frawley Stadium Picnic Deck to cheer on the Loco Beach Coconuts and Texas Tailgaters, and Banana Ball did NOT disappoint! From the nonstop action and laughs to the incredible energy in the stadium, it was the perfect night to celebrate our amazing team.

We’re so grateful for the opportunity to create experiences like this and spend time together outside of the office. Because we don’t just work together — we do things together, too! ❤️

And what a way to end the night — a Loco Beach Coconuts WIN! 🥥🏆

We hope our employees and their families had as much fun as we did! What a night to remember! 🍌⚾️

It’s been a busy week here at DOS — and we wouldn’t have it any other way!

Last week, University of Delaware Football coaches and analysts traveled to Owings Mills, MD to observe a Ravens practice and gain valuable insight as they prepare for the upcoming season. Following their visit, DOS was proud to support Coach Carty and his crew with a team lunch — providing an opportunity for the coaching staff to connect, plan, and prepare for an exciting season ahead! DOS is the Official Team Doctor of University of Delaware Athletics! We’re proud to support the athletes, coaches, and staff who represent UD and wish the Hens an incredible season ahead! 🏈

Last night, our Sports Medicine team hosted our annual BBQ with many local Athletic Trainers (ATCs). The ATCs at our area high schools are an incredible part of our sports medicine community, and we’re honored to partner with them throughout the year.

Our partnership is built around injury prevention, return-to-play decisions, and expert injury treatment. DOS physicians provide coverage and support for more than 20 local schools — working closely with ATCs all season long. Whether it’s on the sidelines or just a phone call away, we’re here when they need us to help keep athletes healthy and on the field.

And to wrap up the week, we joined the Wilmington Blue Rocks for their Partners Breakfast at Frawley Stadium. This event was especially exciting following the recent announcement that the team has been acquired by OnDeck Partners. It was great to hear about the future plans for the stadium and the organization. DOS has proudly served as the Official Team Doctors of the Wilmington Blue Rocks for the past decade, continuing a relationship that represents nearly 30 years of providing expert orthopedic care to professional athletes.

It’s only the beginning of many exciting things happening in our community and the sports world, and we’re grateful to be a part of it — supporting athletes of all ages and levels as they pursue their passion and stay in the game. 💪
