When you've been through a traumatic relationship, it can be hard to trust your own perception and your memory of the events. As a result, you might start questioning what happened and if you deserve to feel as bad about it...

This week, we're going to be digging into the self-doubt that can often come with trauma recovery. Reagan is here to share why these feelings come up, why you might feel the need to compare your experience to the traumatic experiences of others, and the things you can do to start learning to trust yourself again.

You don't have to earn your place in ethical non-monogamy. You don't earn your place in ethical non-monogamy by suppressing your needs. You don't become a better partner by pretending difficult feelings don't exist. You don't have to feel guilty or upset if you're not feeling compersion the way you feel like you should.

Giving yourself room to process your complicated emotions can help you grow more than trying to force yourself to feel a specific emotion.

You also don't have to process these emotions yourself. Valid Love can help. At Valid Love Therapy Collective, we work with individuals, couples, and polycules navigating ethical non-monogamy, polyamory, open relationships, and other consensually non-monogamous relationship structures.

Contact us today to learn more about how a Valid Love therapist can help you explore ethical non-monogamy.

Many people assume everyone else is handling non-monogamy better than they are. They're not. You're simply seeing a curated version of their experience.

Remember that social media is the highlight reel. Non-monogamous influencers and non-monogamous friends in your community are always going to show the best parts. They're going to show the really common, harder experiences that most non-monogamous people have experienced.

Healthy non-monogamy isn't the absence of challenges. It's the willingness to work through them.

One of the biggest misconceptions about compersion is that it replaces jealousy. For many people, it doesn't. You might feel proud of the relationship you've built while also feeling vulnerable.

Another challenge is that people often label every uncomfortable feeling as jealousy.
Sometimes it is jealousy. But sometimes it's something else entirely.

You might be experiencing:

πŸ’— Fear
πŸ’— Grief
πŸ’— Loneliness
πŸ’— Insecurity
πŸ’— Hurt

When we call all of these experiences jealousy, we often miss opportunities to understand what we actually need.

Sometimes, when people join ethically non-monogamous relationships, they can feel like they're failing at it. They may have a lot of expectations of how the relationships should go and what they should feel. They want to be open-minded. They want to be emotionally evolved. They want to avoid possessiveness. They want to do non-monogamy "correctly."

When uncomfortable or complicated feelings arise, they can then feel like they're doing something wrong. The truth is that healthy relationships... whether monogamous or non-monogamous... are not built on having the "right" feelings.

They're built on how we respond to our feelings.

At Valid Love, we respect and affirm relationships of all types and dynamics and this week, we want to dedicate this blog post to members of our poly community.

Rebecca is back to talk to us about compersion: how it presents in polyamorous relationships, what it means if you don't feel compersion all the time, and how you can feel more secure and affirmed in your polyamory especially when you don' feel like you're doing it "right."

You're Not Lazy. You're Not Failing.

When ADHD symptoms fluctuate because of hormonal changes, it's easy to blame yourself. When you understand how hormones can impact your symptoms, you can learn to replace shame with curiosity and ask yourself: "what factors might be affecting my brain right now?"

You don't have to figure that out alone. Therapy can be a useful tool for understanding your unique patterns, identifying triggers, and building systems that work with your brain instead of against it.

If your ADHD symptoms seem to change over time, you're not imagining it. Valid Love is here to help. Contact us today to find out how a Valid Love therapist can help you, and learn more about our neurodiversity affirming approach to care.

Gender-affirming hormone therapy can also have a significant impact on your ADHD symptoms. Whether it's hormones being blocked or hormones being supplemented, you may notice changes in focus, emotional regulation, executive functioning, or energy levels during gender-affirming hormone therapy.

Transition often improves overall well-being and reduces distress which may make managing ADHD easier. While research on the relationship between ADHD and HRT is growing, we do know that experiences vary.

Whether hormonal changes occur through puberty, menstruation, menopause, medical treatment, or gender-affirming care, those changes may affect how ADHD symptoms are experienced.

The Change can also impact ADHD symptoms as well. Declining and fluctuating estrogen levels may contribute to:

πŸ’— Brain fog

πŸ’— Increased forgetfulness

πŸ’— Difficulty concentrating

πŸ’— Emotional regulation challenges

πŸ’— Reduced effectiveness of previously successful coping skills

πŸ’— Increased anxiety

In fact, perimenopause can have such an impact on ADHD symptoms that some people discover their ADHD for the first time. When previously manageable symptoms become disruptive, it might be time to connect with a professional.
