Med Word Wednesday 🧠
June is all about learning more about hormones!
Today’s term: FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone)
FSH = a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that helps stimulate ovarian follicles to grow and mature before ovulation.
But what does that actually mean for you?
👉 It plays a key role in the menstrual cycle
👉 It helps prepare an egg for ovulation
👉 FSH levels naturally change throughout life and throughout the cycle
While hormones are often discussed in relation to female menstruation, hormones exist and play important roles in all people.
One reason FSH is commonly tested is to help evaluate whether someone may be approaching or experiencing perimenopause. Higher FSH levels can indicate that the ovaries are becoming less responsive, which is a normal part of aging and the menopausal transition.
It’s important to remember that FSH levels can change significantly over time, so a single lab value is only one piece of the puzzle when looking at hormonal health.
If you have questions about hormonal changes, perimenopause, or how your body is changing, we'd be happy to help point you in the right direction.
