One of our therapists, Mary Rome Daniel, uses a simple but powerful intervention called the “Worry Monster” to help children externalize their anxiety. Instead of holding worries inside, kids draw them out—giving their fears a shape, a voice, and a little less power. 🧟👹👾

From there, we help them build coping skills to “fight back” when the worry monster shows up. Confidence grows when kids realize they’re not helpless against their thoughts.

We would like to congratulate our very own, Kimber Smith, on her acceptance to ECU’s Doctoral Program in Medical Family Therapy! 🥳👩🏼‍⚕️🧠

Kimber will be continuing her work with her clients at Kindred while pursuing her PhD. 💜 This ongoing clinical work will allow her to further develop her ability to serve clients within an integrative mental and medical health care model.

The goal of the Medical Family Therapy (MedFT) program is to expand students’ knowledge of healthcare by enhancing competency in biopsychosocial-spiritual and family-based treatment approaches, with an emphasis on integrated care, research, and a deeper theoretical understanding of both medical and mental health conditions.

Congrats, Kimber! We’re so excited to support you on this journey.💛💜

Could removing the scale from your home have a positive impact on your child’s body image? 🤔

I recently had a conversation with another mom who’s a bit further along in motherhood than I am. We were reminiscing on our experiences as teenage girls in the 2000’s—especially in terms of body image. She went on to share how much more daunting she feels the teenage years are for her girls; and then she said something that hasn’t left my mind since.

“Yeah, we don’t allow scales in our home.”

Wow. That’s not a household rule I hear a lot. I was curious on her reasoning behind this decision.

“I remember being 9 years old, noticing my body changing, and weighing myself up to five times a day. My parents had no idea what I was doing in the bathroom, and over time, it began to consume my life. I eventually started tracking my weight in a journal and restricting food. I would run around outside and come in just to see if the number had decreased. When it hadn’t, I felt so much shame. Even today, my parents still don’t know how much I struggled with body image, and still do as an adult.”

Her response was powerful, and resonated with me so much. As a mother of a 6yo girl, I began to think about my friend’s decision, came home and put my own scale high up in the linen closet. I’m not sure I’ll keep in there, but it’s something I think of often.

I’m interested to know, what are your thoughts on being a scale-free home? Of course, there’s not one right or wrong answer here, but it’s an interesting topic to explore.

Parents (or anyone else who has kind and insightful opinions😊), tell us in the comments what you think!
