Meet Cosmo Disori, one of BeLoved’s awesome Social Workers. 🤎
Cosmo started at BeLoved in January 2025, after working with two different hospices & also in mental health rehabilitation. 🌻
Cosmo has always carried a desire to work in hospice, but two influential pieces of media for him were the “How to Die in Oregon” documentary and “Death and Dying” book by Elizabeth Kubler-Ross. “I’ve always been interested in mortality & how we can help each other in this process.”
Engaging a patient in life review is a deeply rewarding part of Cosmo’s job: “It’s exactly what it sounds like,” he says, “Sharing stories, hobbies, interests, because it helps them to remember more, and they light up. I know for sure that there’s something healing about doing life review - especially if the whole family can be present, because then family can share stories that others can't remember.”🧡
Cosmo also provides grief & emotional support to patients & their families, always bringing a strengths-based perspective. He also advocates for good communication between family members & helps patients connect with resources when necessary.
“I also advocate for patients’ right to self-determination - that’s a core pillar of social work ethics. I remind everyone in the family that we don’t get to override a patient’s decision. A choice might a ‘bad’ in a clinical sense, but it’s the person’s decision. It’s their right, and stripping them of that right is more harmful than their choice.”
Additionally, Cosmo supports caregivers, advocating for them & connecting them with resources, like free in-home care agencies.🫶
“I love that ancillary therapies are a big part of what we do at BeLoved. It’s more holistic, and all-encompassing in end-of-life care. These services aren’t technically necessary, but BeLoved pays for them out-of-pocket. Music and massage DO improve quality of life, and I see how effective they are for patients. We are really seeing the patients and their family, not just treating their symptoms or pain.”🍁
