This Men's Mental Health Month I want to talk about something that does not get enough attention — how men grieve. And why so many of them are doing it completely alone.
As a licensed therapist who specializes in men's mental health I work with men every single day who are carrying enormous loss. The death of a father. A marriage that ended. An identity that disappeared. A version of their life they thought they would have.
And most of them have never called it grief. Because they were never taught they were allowed to.
Men's grief does not always look like sadness. It looks like anger. Withdrawal. Overworking. Drinking. Irritability with the people they love most. These are not character flaws. These are grief responses with nowhere healthy to go.
This month — check on the men in your life. Not just a how are you. A real conversation. Because the ones who say I am fine are often the ones carrying the most.
Share this with a man who needs to hear it. 💙

The quality of every relationship is determined by one thing — how well two people repair after things go wrong. 💙
Research shows it is not the absence of conflict that predicts relationship success. It is the speed and quality of repair after conflict.
Here is the simplest repair there is. Three words — said after a conflict before it is fully resolved:
💬 "I miss us."
Those three words remind both people that there is an us worth coming back to. That the relationship is bigger than the argument. And they open a door that defensiveness had closed.
You do not have to be perfect in conflict. You just have to be willing to come back. 💙
Save this for the next time you and someone you love need to find your way back to each other.

If you have ever made yourself smaller so someone else felt more comfortable — who taught you that you were too much? 💙
When you perform a smaller version of yourself — the relationships you build are built around a version of you that does not actually exist. Which means you can be surrounded by people who love you — and still feel completely alone.
This week — in just one conversation — let yourself take up your full space:
🗣️ Share the opinion you would normally hold back
💙 Accept the compliment without deflecting
✨ Mention the achievement without the disclaimer
Notice the discomfort. Then notice that you survived it. That survival is how your nervous system learns that your full self is safe to be. 💙
Save this for the next time you feel yourself starting to shrink.

In this clip from the Black Sheep Perspective Podcast I get personal about my own marriage and what it actually takes to make it work.

My wife and I do intentional check-ins 3 times a week. We hold space for each other to share our true feelings — even when those feelings are hard to say and harder to hear.

That level of openness and honesty doesn’t come naturally. It’s a practice. It’s a commitment. And in recovery, where so much of the damage was done through secrecy and emotional shutdown, it’s not optional.

If you want a real relationship you have to be willing to show up for real conversations. Even the uncomfortable ones. Especially those.

I was 12 years old when it all started. And I didn’t understand any of it. 🖤

In this clip from the Black Sheep Perspective Podcast I talk about the beginning — substances and mental health hitting at the same time, before I had any awareness of what was actually going on inside me. The mental health diagnosis wouldn’t come until much later.

Now I’m a father. And when I look at my 14 year old — healthy, safe, supported — I feel something I didn’t expect.

Grief. For the little lost 12 year old version of me who had none of that.

That boy deserved better. And working with men in recovery is, in a lot of ways, my way of making sure other people’s lost kids find their way back too.

I talk about this on the Black Sheep Perspective Podcast — because I think people need to understand what they’re actually up against.

That arrest should have been enough. For a lot of people watching from the outside, it probably looked like it was.

But addiction doesn’t care about consequences. It doesn’t care about embarrassment or legal trouble or the people you’re hurting. It is that powerful.

It took a lot more pain and a lot more time before I truly found my footing in recovery. And sharing that isn’t shameful — it’s the truth about what this disease actually does to a person.

If you’ve been through something major and still struggled after — you’re not weak. You’re human. And recovery is still possible.

We don’t talk about this enough in men’s recovery — the childhood experiences that quietly shaped everything. How you handle anger. How you attach to people. How you cope when things get hard.

None of that came out of nowhere.

In this clip from the Black Sheep Perspective Podcast, I talk about how our earliest experiences don’t just influence us — they form us. And until we’re willing to look back honestly, we’ll keep wondering why we keep showing up the same way.

Healing isn’t just about what you do today. It’s about understanding where today came from.

One of the best pieces of advice I ever received in recovery wasn’t a strategy or a technique. It was simple — and it hit harder than anything else.

You are not alone. There are so many people dealing with the exact same thing you are.

In this clip from the Black Sheep Perspective Podcast, I talk about how that truth cracked something open in me. Because when you’re in it, it feels like no one could possibly understand. Like your situation is too specific, too shameful, too complicated.

It’s not. And knowing that changes everything.
