I did not grow up with a conception of my ancestors. Anyone in the family who had passed was "gone" and that was that. Death was an end point where only stories lived on.
This all changed for me one October evening.
Fullfilling my spiritual curiosity and quest for gnosis (know thy self) under the guidance of an Elder, I found myself at a West African inspired Ancestralization ritual. When the circle was posed with a question for reflection, I was suddenly taken by a feeling deep inside my belly. It was as if all my organs were errupting in a collective quiver. Looking back, I recognize this as an activation of my DNA.
My ancestors were communicating with me.
The undeniable sense that I had of them opened a gateway for me to further explore them as a continuation of consciousness rather than a story from the past, or a one dimensional photo on a wall.
I still do not live with a 'conception' of my ancestors.
I now experience relationships with them that encompasses a broad range of emotional expressions; laughter, joy, anger, silliness, frustration, and comfort to name a few.
I will be sharing more about my journey and a framework that helped me to wade into the waters of ancestral relationships on Tuesday October 13th via Zoom.
This discussion always proves to be lively, curious, and heart felt....

Ages ago when I had flocks of chickens, a predator made its way into my coop. It feasted on my flock and waltzed out with a full belly, leaving behind a few survivors and a carcass or two.
Irate at losing yet another flock to the cunning of the wild, I screamed into the woods, "What do you want from me, huh?"
I stomped around my yard in a tantrum (oh, this Sagittarius) has fire) trying to figure out how the varmint got in, how to bulletproof my coop, and how to calm the F down.
Staring at the quiet trees beyond my coop, I got quiet.
Took a breath.
And listened.
I was all out of alignment.
Not with myself, but with HER. Nature and her band of wily thieves.
I walked to the coop and picked up one of the dead that was left behind. I wrapped twine around her feet and walked into the shadowy woods. As I hung her from a branch, I spoke with gentle conviction, "I gratefully give this offering to the spirits of nature and all her kin for allowing our family to reside here in peace. I am thankful for all that you offer us, please accept this as a gesture of our appreciation."
A few days later I wandered into the woods where the offering was made.
The tattered edges of the twine swayed in the wind.
The offering was received.
That summer, the remainder of my flock lived in harmony, and I remembered not to fall out of relationship with the unseen."
