Being a BCBA is incredibly rewarding—but it can also come with a weight that many people outside the field don’t see.

The passion that drives us to help others can sometimes make it difficult to recognize when we need support ourselves.

At Old Town ABA, we believe the best care comes from clinicians who feel supported, connected, and valued.

To all the BCBAs out there: thank you for the difference you make every day.

What is something you wish someone told you before becoming a BCBA?

There’s something special about working with people who genuinely cheer each other on.

Our team’s love language is words of affirmation—because encouragement comes naturally around here.

These aren’t just compliments—they’re part of our culture. We celebrate wins, support each other through challenges, and recognize the hard work happening behind the scenes every single day.

We believe that when our team feels valued and appreciated, they’re empowered to provide the highest level of support to the individuals and families we serve

Some of our best ideas happen outside the office. ☕💻

This week, the Old Town ABA team spent the day coworking at Common Culture in Fairfax—enjoying a productive change of scenery, collaborating on exciting initiatives, and fueling up with some seriously great coffee.

At Old Town ABA, we believe that investing in our team means creating opportunities to connect, collaborate, and grow together. Sometimes all it takes is a fresh environment (and an excellent coffee) to spark new ideas

3 Realities of Being a BCBA That No One Talks About

1. The relationships you build matter just as much as the science.
A strong behavior plan is only as effective as the relationships behind it. Being a BCBA means more than understanding behavior principles—it means learning how to communicate with families, caregivers, direct support professionals, and other providers. You’ll spend time building trust, navigating different perspectives, and finding ways to create meaningful change that fits into a person’s everyday life.

2. The job is emotionally rewarding… and emotionally challenging.
BCBAs get to witness some of the most meaningful moments—someone gaining independence, learning a new skill, communicating in a new way, or achieving a goal that once felt out of reach. But behind those wins are often challenges: supporting families through difficult moments, managing complex behaviors, balancing competing needs, and making tough clinical decisions. The work requires compassion, patience, and the ability to keep showing up.

3. Your growth doesn’t stop after certification.
Passing the exam is a huge accomplishment, but it’s only the beginning of your journey. The reality is that every client, environment, and team will teach you something new. You’ll continue developing your clinical judgment, communication skills, leadership abilities, and confidence over time. The best BCBAs stay curious, seek feedback, and recognize that growth is a lifelong part of the profession.

Being a BCBA is so much more than assessments, data sheets, and behavior plans—it’s about people, relationships, and creating lasting impact.

Celebrating Progress—One Step at a Time

Today, we’re giving a special shout-out to one of the incredible individuals we have the privilege of supporting.

While reviewing progress data, one of our consultants was reminded that success isn’t always measured by the absence of challenges—it’s measured by growth.

Although maladaptive behaviors remain an area of focus and the individual’s family continues to work closely with their medical team and the progress in other areas has been truly inspiring. We’ve seen meaningful increases in functional communication and greater independence in completing non-preferred daily living tasks.

These moments are a reminder that progress isn’t always linear, but every new skill learned, every successful interaction, and every step toward greater independence is worth celebrating.

We are so proud of this individual’s hard work, the dedication of their support team, and the collaborative efforts of everyone involved. 👏✨

We recently asked our consultants to fill in the blank:

“The biggest challenge I face supporting behavior is ______.”

Thank you to our incredible consultants for sharing their honest and thoughtful responses. It’s always valuable to hear perspectives from those doing this work every day and to better understand the challenges they navigate while supporting individuals, families, and teams.

Their insights remind us that effective behavior support requires collaboration, flexibility, and a commitment to meeting each person where they are.
