Happy Music Therapy Monday! Time to play a game!!

At the New Hampshire Family Support Conference, we invited participants to join us in a round of “Is it music therapy or not?” We shared real-life scenarios where music was being used and, as a group, decided whether each example qualified as music therapy. It led to great discussion, some surprises, and a deeper understanding of what makes music therapy unique! If you’d like to learn a little bit more about music therapy, be sure to check-out some of the other music therapy Monday posts on our page!!

Important note before we begin: These examples are all made up. Any resemblance to anyone past or present is coincidental.

Let’s try one together!

Cassadi Kulak, MT-BC begins seeing Donna, an 83-Year-Old who was just transferred to Hospice Care. She is very anxious about moving to hospice and experiencing a lot of pain. Cassadi plays music from Donna’s favorite movie, the Wizard of Oz, in order to help her take deeper breaths and lower her
Anxiety.

Is it music therapy or not??

This is music therapy!!

Cassadi is a board-certified Music Therapist. She created non-music goals for Donna and used personalized musical interventions to achieve those goals!

Swipe through to play along and see how you do! Let us know in the comments how many you got right! 👀

We’d like to share one of our favorite moments from this past weekend at the New Hampshire Family Support Conference!

In this workshop, participants came together to create a band, “The Rockers,” and collaboratively rewrite their own version of “Flowers” by Miley Cyrus. What started as a simple idea quickly turned into a full group performance, shaped by everyone’s input, creativity, and energy!

This video captures just a piece of that experience. Even though not everyone is on camera, you can still hear the full group, with some participants just out of frame still singing, playing, and dancing along.

This performance is a fantastic reminder of what can happen when we come together through music!! Thank you to all of our Rockers and we can't wait to see you all again next year!

We had such a great time this past Saturday at the New Hampshire Family Support Conference in Concord. It’s always an incredible event, and we’re so grateful to have been part of it again this year!

We had the opportunity to offer two workshops, each with a very different (but equally meaningful) focus. In our first session, participants came together to form a band, “The Rockers,” and collaborated to rewrite their own parody of “Flowers” originally by Miley Cyrus. We were blown away by the creativity, teamwork, and musicality of the group. The energy in the room was something special! While not everyone is in the video, you can definitely hear the full band, with some participants just out of frame still singing, playing, and dancing along!! Be sure to check out our other post to see the final performance by “The Rockers!”

Our second workshop took a more educational approach, focusing on real-life applications of music therapy. We played a game called “Is it music therapy or not?” and had some great conversations about what music therapy is, what it isn’t, and how it can be used to support individuals in meaningful ways. We hope participants left with a clearer understanding of the field and some helpful local resources!

It was so nice to see many familiar GSMT faces throughout the day, and to make new connections as well. We’re always glad to be part of this event and are already looking forward to next year!!

Music has the power to make us feel so many things.

For World Music Therapy Week, our team of MT-BCs came together to share songs we like to listen to when we want to feel happy, calm, motivated, and seen. We created four emotion-based playlists that reflect the wide variety of music we each gravitate toward to support different feelings. Not only are these playlists a great way to explore new music that might support emotional regulation, they’re also a fun way to get to know our team through the music that resonates with us!

In music therapy, getting to know an individual’s music preferences is a key part of the process. The songs we connect with can support emotional expression, regulation, motivation, and meaningful connection. Just like our team, every client brings their own unique musical identity into the space, and we use that to support their personal goals!!

🎧 Please note: Some songs on these playlists may contain explicit lyrics or themes, listener discretion is advised!

✨ We’d love to hear from you!
What songs make you feel:
• Happy
• Calm
• Motivated
• Seen or understood

And be sure to check out the “I Feel Happy 😁,” “I Feel Calm 🧘,” “I Feel Motivated 💪,” and “I Feel Seen ☺️” playlists created by Spencer D. Cole on Spotify.

Happy World Music Therapy Week from all of us at GSMT! 🎶✨

This week, we’re celebrating the impact of music therapy and the meaningful work of music therapists around the world. What started as a single day of recognition has grown into a full week, thanks to the World Federation of Music Therapy (WFMT), creating more space to share, learn, and celebrate the power of music therapy in a thoughtful and inclusive way!

🎵 Why does music therapy matter?
Music therapy is the clinical, evidence-based use of music to support individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship. Using client-preferred music, music therapists help address needs across multiple areas, including:
• Communication
• Emotional expression and regulation
• Cognitive skills
• Social connection
• Physical movement
• Overall quality of life
• And more!

Whether it’s developing coping skills, building confidence, improving communication, or creating meaningful moments of connection, music therapy meets individuals where they are and supports them in reaching their personal goals through the power of music!

✨ We’d love for you to celebrate with us, share in the comments:
• A favorite song 🎶
• A shoutout to a music therapist 💙
• Or how music impacts your life!!

And keep an eye out this week for more World Music Therapy Week celebrations!

Although it’s been a slow start to spring here in New England, our team is still making the most of it! Getting outside, enjoying the sunshine (when possible) ☀️, and taking in everything nature has to offer.

Two of our amazing music therapists, Elizabeth and Mike, are pictured here on a recent run 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️, it’s always impressive how these two can run and chat at the same time!

As the weather begins to warm up, we encourage you to spend some time outside! Whether it’s a walk, time with friends, or simply enjoying a quiet moment in nature. Taking time to reset and recharge can make a big difference. ✨
