October is National Herpes Awareness Month.

The Herpes virus is spread through direct skin-to-skin contact. There are two (2) types of viruses. Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) usually occurs near the mouth most commonly referred to as a cold sore or fever blister. Both children and adults may contract HSV-1 from non-s*xual contact with saliva. Herpes simplex type 2 (HSV-2) is spread through s*xual contact that can cause blisters and open sores in the ge***al area. Sores can occur on or around the ge***als, re**um or mouth. Some individuals with HSV-2 do not have visible sores but still can transmit the virus.

Reduce your risk of HSV-2 by being in a long term mutually monogamous relationship and practice correct condom use. To get tested, consult a healthcare provider for blood work and a physical examination.

HIV is a virus that attacks cells that help the body fight infection. It is spread by contact with certain bodily fluids of a person with HIV, most commonly during unprotected s*x or through sharing injection drug equipment. If left untreated, HIV can lead to the disease AIDS. Luckily, effective treatment with HIV medicine is available. If taken as prescribed, HIV medicine can reduce the amount of HIV in the blood to a very low level. If a person’s viral load is so low that a standard lab can’t detect it, this is called having an undetectable viral load. People living with HIV who take HIV medicine as prescribed and get and keep an undetectable viral load can live long and healthy lives and will not transmit HIV to their HIV-negative partners through s*x. There are effective methods to prevent getting HIV through s*x or drug use, including pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). Overdose can hit close to home. August 31st, we remember and move to stand strong as a community to stop the hurt. Keep our tribal communities safe and strong.
An overdose can happen when the body is overwhelmed by a toxic amount of substance or combination of substances. It’s possible to overdose on many substances if they are abused, including alcohol, illicit drugs, and even prescribed medication.

Remember loved ones lost to drug overdose.
Acknowledge the grief of families and friends.
Spread the message that overdose is preventable.
Value people who use drugs and those in recovery
