At Wingate University DPT, one of the greatest strengths of our program is the way our students learn with and from one another while serving others.

We would like to recognize several of our students for their outstanding work this past weekend with Project 658, where they helped provide pro bono physical therapy services to members of our community. Through their compassion, professionalism, and commitment to service, these students not only made a meaningful difference in the lives of others, but also embraced the opportunity to mentor, collaborate, and grow together as future physical therapists.

A special thank you to:
First-year student: Sonia Piombino

Second-year students: Emily Wiesner, Sophia Ternes, Rachel Catania, Noah Jordan, and Lila McDuffie

Third-year student: Jake Baugher

Experiences like these exemplify what it means to be part of the Wingate DPT family—supporting one another across cohorts, learning through service, and living out our commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care.

Thank you for representing our program so well. We are incredibly proud of each of you!

Please join our very own Dr. Jill Nappi-Kaehler tonight (June 10th) at 7:00pm, where she will present an APTA North Carolina webinar titled "Everything but Epley: Expanding Your BPPV Toolbox ".

Dr. Jill Nappi-Kaehler recently completed the Advanced Vestibular Physical Therapist (AVPT) Certification through the University of Pittsburgh, a rigorous year-long post-professional program focused on advanced vestibular evaluation, differential diagnosis, clinical decision-making, and evidence-based management of vestibular disorders. Building on this advanced training, Dr. Nappi-Kaehler's presentation will review updated and advanced approaches to the examination and treatment of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), including strategies that go beyond traditional Dix-Hallpike testing and Epley repositioning.

Participants will explore contemporary concepts related to canalithiasis and cupulolithiasis, examination techniques for posterior, horizontal, and anterior canal involvement, evidence-based repositioning maneuvers, and clinical considerations such as residual dizziness and BPPV recurrence.

The webinar is free for APTA North Carolina members, and is only $37.50 for PTs who are non-members, $22.50 for non-member PTAs, and only $15.00 for non-member students.

Sign up for the webinar can be completed at the APTA North Carolina's website.

This past month, Wingate University Doctor of Physical Therapy, had the incredible opportunity to travel to the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota for a service and cultural immersion experience alongside Sinte Gleska University and the SGU Ranch team.

Throughout the week, our students worked with children during equine activities, led a community exercise class at the local high school, and provided injury screens for more than 25 individuals. We also spent time collaborating and brainstorming with the ranch team about future partnership opportunities, including logistics and planning for a potential “Rodeo for All” event.

In addition to service, we were honored to participate in a cultural learning day where we learned about the history of Rosebud, the inipi (sweat lodge), drumming, hand games, and other Lakota traditions and practices.

After the work was done, we explored the beauty of South Dakota through hikes along the Cowboy Trail, the Badlands, and Custer State Park, where we even found ourselves walking alongside bison.

This trip was filled with learning, connection, adventure, and meaningful conversations. We are incredibly grateful for the hospitality, relationships, and experiences shared throughout the week and are excited about future opportunities to continue growing this partnership.

Over the last few days, we have been sharing highlights as our third-year DPT students wrap up a major milestone—their final week of didactic exams.

During the last six weeks they have been back on campus completing a mini-semester, before they return to the clinic for their last two rotations.

During this mini-semester, students had the opportunity to complete one of our electives and dive deeper into areas they are passionate about.

Students were able to choose from a range of elective experiences, including Advanced Manual Therapy, Advanced Concussion and Vestibular Management, Advanced Pelvic Health, Anatomy Faculty Preceptorship, and even a service trip to South Dakota.

Here is an action shot from our Advanced Concussion and Vestibular Management Course (sound on for full video experience is encouraged).
