This past month, Wingate University Doctor of Physical Therapy, had the incredible opportunity to travel to the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota for a service and cultural immersion experience alongside Sinte Gleska University and the SGU Ranch team.
Throughout the week, our students worked with children during equine activities, led a community exercise class at the local high school, and provided injury screens for more than 25 individuals. We also spent time collaborating and brainstorming with the ranch team about future partnership opportunities, including logistics and planning for a potential “Rodeo for All” event.
In addition to service, we were honored to participate in a cultural learning day where we learned about the history of Rosebud, the inipi (sweat lodge), drumming, hand games, and other Lakota traditions and practices.
After the work was done, we explored the beauty of South Dakota through hikes along the Cowboy Trail, the Badlands, and Custer State Park, where we even found ourselves walking alongside bison.
This trip was filled with learning, connection, adventure, and meaningful conversations. We are incredibly grateful for the hospitality, relationships, and experiences shared throughout the week and are excited about future opportunities to continue growing this partnership.
