May is mental health awareness month, a time to bring attention to the importance of mental well-being and to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health conditions. It serves as a reminder that mental health is just as vital as physical health and deserves equal attention and care. Millions of people experience mental health challenges each year, yet many do not seek help due to fear, misunderstanding, or a lack of resources. By promoting open conversations and sharing supportive environments where individuals feel safe to seek help. Mental Health Month encourages everyone to prioritize self-care, check in with loved ones, and advocate for accessible mental health services.

Throughout Mental Health Month, organizations and individuals are encouraged to participate in activities that promote emotional well-being and resilience. This can include educational campaigns, community events, and sharing personal stories that highlight the importance of mental health support. Employers, caregivers, and community leaders play a key role in fostering environments that support mental wellness and reduce stress. Simple actions, such as practicing mindfulness, staying connected with others, or seeking professional support when needed, can make a meaningful difference. Together, we can help people see that they do not have to face their struggles alone.

The SCEMSA Pro Rodeo brings together live entertainment, family-friendly activities, and emergency medical services in one event.

On May 8–9, the South Carolina State Fairgrounds will host two days of live rodeo action, including bull riding, barrel racing, and team roping, along with a Saturday night concert featuring Taylor Ingle and Dirty Grass Souls.

Attendees can also enjoy food trucks, vendors, a petting zoo, and activities designed for all ages.

Throughout the event, there will be opportunities to explore ambulances, meet EMS professionals, and gain a better understanding of how emergency care begins long before a patient reaches the hospital. Hands-on experiences and educational elements are built into the event to connect the public with EMS in a meaningful way.

This event is designed to strengthen awareness of EMS while creating opportunities for the community to engage directly with providers across South Carolina.

Proceeds from the SCEMSA Pro Rodeo support EMS initiatives across the state, including workforce development, education access, and disaster preparedness.

We encourage EMS agencies, partners, and community members to be part of this statewide effort.

In observance of National Nurses Week, May 6-12, the South Carolina Department of Public Health (DPH) is applauding the critical work the state’s licensed nurses do to protect the health and safety of South Carolinians each day. DPH encourages residents to use this observance as an opportunity to recognize and thank nurses in their communities as well.

There are more than 95,000 licensed nurses in South Carolina, including hundreds who perform a wide range of duties at DPH.

In April, seven DPH nurses were recipients of the 2026 Palmetto Gold award: Tabetha Bentley, Karen S. Green, Jean Hart, Carrie R. Knoell, Heidi B. McCaulley, Jennifer T. Poling, and Angela P. Seigler. Only 100 registered nurses are selected statewide each year following a nomination process based on excellence in nursing practice and commitment to the nursing profession.
