HEPATITIS AWARENESS WEEK
The week of July 28 is Hepatitis Awareness Week allowing National Day Calendar to draw attention to a preventable liver disease. Throughout the week, hepatitis C patients are encouraged to take advantage of medications used to treat the condition.

Hepatitis is an inflammatory liver condition. There are five different types of hepatitis, and each type of hepatitis gets transmitted in different ways.

Types of Hepatitis
1. Hepatitis A is transmitted by consuming food or water contaminated by the f***s of someone with the Hepatitis A virus.
2. Hepatitis B is transmitted through infected body fluids or shared needles and razors.
3. Hepatitis C is transmitted through direct contact with infected body fluids.
4. Hepatitis D is transmitted through direct contact with infected blood and only occurs in conjunction with Hepatitis B.
5. Hepatitis E is transmitted by infected water supplies.

Hepatitis B and C are the most common forms of this disease in the United States and worldwide. About 1.2 million people in the United States have Hepatitis B and about 240 million people have Hepatitis B around the world. Up to 3.9 million Americans have Hepatitis C with 71 million people having this form of Hepatitis across the globe. However, Hepatitis E is not that common in the United States. This type of Hepatitis is more prevalent in other parts of the world, including the Middle East, Central America, and Africa.

Vaccinations are available for Hepatitis A and B. While no vaccines exist for Hepatitis C, most infections are cured with antiviral medications. Hepatitis C is easily transmitted and normally doesn't present itself with symptoms right away, either. That is why everyone is encouraged to get tested for this disease. Complications from Hepatitis C include scarring of the liver, liver cancer, and liver failure. Preventative measures are also encouraged.

*Practice safe s*x - use a condom, be monogamous, or abstain altogether.

*Avoid the use of illicit drugs - sharing needles spreads the disease. Seek treatment and assistance if you think you have a drug problem.

*Use caution when getting body piercings and tattoos. Reputable artists sterilize their equipment using an autoclave. Artists should be licensed. If an artist isn't willing to discuss their practices, find another artist.

Hepatitis Awareness Week encourages everyone to learn more about hepatitis and how it might impact our lives.

Chronic Disease Awareness Day – Raising Awareness for Lifelong Conditions

Chronic Disease Awareness Day, observed annually on July 10, is dedicated to increasing public understanding of chronic illnesses, advocating for better healthcare access, and supporting those living with long-term health conditions. The date was chosen because 7 out of the top 10 leading causes of death in the United States are chronic diseases.

Autoimmune and autoinflammatory arthritis, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), lupus, and axial spondyloarthritis, are chronic diseases that require lifelong management. This awareness day highlights the challenges faced by individuals with these conditions and encourages proactive healthcare measures.

What Are Chronic Diseases?
A chronic disease is a health condition that lasts one year or more, requires ongoing medical care, and may limit daily activities. Unlike acute illnesses, chronic diseases do not have a quick cure and often require long-term treatment and lifestyle adjustments.

Common chronic diseases include:

Autoimmune and autoinflammatory arthritis (RA, PsA, lupus, ankylosing spondylitis)
Diabetes
Heart disease
Cancer
Chronic respiratory diseases (asthma, COPD)
Neurological disorders (Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s)

Chronic diseases can result from genetic factors, environmental influences, lifestyle choices, or immune system dysfunction. They often require multidisciplinary care, including medication, physical therapy, dietary changes, and mental health support. It's not uncommon for people with a chronic disease to have co-existing conditions.

Autoimmune and Autoinflammatory Arthritis as Chronic Diseases
Autoimmune and autoinflammatory arthritis are lifelong conditions where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own tissues, leading to inflammation, joint damage, and systemic complications. With AiArthritis diseases there is potential organ involvement as some forms can affect the heart, lungs, and kidneys. Since these conditions do not have a cure, raising awareness on early diagnosis, treatment options, and patient support is crucial.

World Chocolate Day
Established in 2009, World Chocolate Day marks the supposed anniversary of the day that this iconic dessert made its first entrance into Europe in 1550. All around the world on this date, candy stores, and local suppliers place their best-loved merchandise on sale so that everyone, both young and old, can enjoy a nibble of the stuff.

Chocolate comes from the seed of the Theobroma Cacao tree. Cacao grows in Mexico, Central America, and Northern South America, where it has been cultivated for at least three millennia. However, Africa holds 70% of the growing cacao trees in the world today. The earliest known observation of using cacao seeds is from around 1100 BC. The tree seeds have a very serious, bitter taste and must be fermented to develop the flavor.

In order to craft a bar of chocolate, seeds from a cacao tree are covered with banana leaves and left to ferment, at which point they are called cocoa beans. Once the cocoa beans have arrived at their processing plant, they are roasted slowly at a low temperature. Then it’s time to separate the shells from the nibs so that the nibs can be ground to a fine powder called cocoa liquor, which is just pure chocolate in rough form. The cocoa mass is often liquified and molded with or without other ingredients. This is the state where you get chocolate liquor. The chocolate liquor then gets processed into two components – cocoa butter and cocoa solids.

The two products most vital to chocolate production come from this cocoa liquor paste. Cocoa powder is produced and packed for purchase at grocery stores so that we can bake the beloved roasted taste profile into our cakes and cookies, while cocoa butter is produced so that manufacturers can use it as an ingredient in their chocolate bars.

A lot of research into this edible treasure has found that it is a powerful source of antioxidants, plus it helps to improve blood flow, lower blood pressure, and reduce the risk of heart disease. It also increases serotonin and dopamine levels, which helps to boost mood. Many people are advised to eat more dark chocolate as it contains healthier benefits. Tons of treats are made from chocolate – hot chocolate milk, chocolate milk, chocolate cake and brownies, chocolate candy bars, and a lot more we enjoy today.

Dark chocolate, which tastes most like its mother seed, is simply a mixture of cocoa liquor, cocoa butter, and sugar. Milk chocolate includes those three ingredients plus a smattering of milk powder. At this point, chocolatiers can add things like nuts, salts, and syrups to elevate the flavor profile. Once cooled, the mixtures harden into the shapes of their respective molds, are wrapped in paper, and shipped to our favorite stores and candy shops.

NATIONAL ICE CREAM MONTH
I scream, you scream! We all scream for ice cream! If you haven't guessed, July is National Ice Cream Month. You have an entire month to cool off with a scoop of your favorite flavor or try a new flavor every day!

Like many of the foods holidays we have on the calendar, the exact origin of ice cream is unknown. What we do know, however, is the origin of ice cream likely dates back to A.D. 54 to 68 during the time when Nero was Emperor of Rome. Evidence shows harvesting ice or snow, then flavoring it with honey or other flavorings to make ice cream. Alexander the Great supposedly enjoyed icy drinks that had flavorings such as honey or nectar, too!

July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month is observed each July to bring awareness to the unique struggles that racial and ethnic minority communities face regarding mental illness in the United States. The COVID-19 pandemic has made it harder for racial and ethnic minority groups to get access to mental health and substance-use treatment services. Throughout the month, the HHS Office of Minority Health (OMH) will focus on promoting tools and resources addressing the stigma about mental health among racial and ethnic minority populations, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A powerful moment captured across generations.

Our very own Solomon, CPSS, pictured alongside Mr. Samuel Grier and his legendary father, Mr. Robert Grier, as they celebrated Father’s Day honoring family, legacy, and history.

Mr. Robert Grier is a true living legend — a retired Sergeant with the Winston-Salem Fire Department and one of the first eight African American firefighters who courageously broke racial barriers, helping pave the way for future generations in public service.

At an incredible 104 years young, after celebrating his birthday this past March 2026, Mr. Grier continues to inspire our community with a legacy of strength, perseverance, and excellence. His remarkable story was recently recognized in the news and widely shared across social media, reminding us all of the impact one life can have on history.

The legacy builders who came before us and opened doors for generations to come.

A special honor to a true trailblazer, Mr. Robert Grier. ❤️🔥
