Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist has been transforming the futures of patients with advanced heart failure for thirty years.

Since physicians implanted that first ventricular assistive device (VAD) at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist in 1996, more than 200 lives have been saved and more than 400 years of life have been gained. That equates to more than 152,500 days with friends, family and loved ones.

VADs are mechanical pumps that help the heart circulate blood. They provide critical support for patients whose hearts can no longer function effectively on their own.

This milestone reflects decades of innovation, expertise and compassionate care, helping patients live longer and return to meaningful moments with family and friends.

Will still carries a piece of advice that has shaped his work as an occupational therapist: “The patient doesn't care how much you know until they know how much you care.”

That became especially real after he cared for three patients recovering from severe burn injuries after the same devastating accident. For weeks at the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist J. Paul Sticht Center on Aging and Rehabilitation, Will helped each patient rebuild strength, confidence and the everyday skills needed to return to life outside the hospital.

Progress came in pieces – small wins, hard days and trust earned over time.

Months after all three patients completed inpatient rehabilitation, Will and several members of the care team were invited to a service at the patients' church, where one patient shared what recovery had meant – not only the medical care, but the people who helped carry them through it.

It stayed with Will because care teams do not always get to see what happens after discharge. Sometimes, the impact shows up later – when someone returns home, finds their voice again or tells their story in their own words.

“What we do has a much greater impact than we sometimes realize in the moment.”

Nearly five years into his career at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, that belief still shapes how Will shows up – in the hard parts, the quiet parts and the small steps that mean everything to the person taking them.

As a radiation therapist, Christi has spent nearly 12 years helping ensure patients receive the care they need during some of life's most challenging moments. Long before the first patient arrives, she's already at work, bringing the focus, experience and dedication that help make each treatment possible.

While patients may only see part of what goes into their care, it's professionals like Christi who help build the foundation for every step that follows. Her years of experience and commitment to her patients are felt far beyond the treatment room.

A water main break in Forsyth County is impacting portions of our hospital campus and several outpatient locations, including Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

As a result, some appointments and non-emergent procedures may need to be rescheduled, and patients affected by any changes will be contacted directly.

Our emergency departments remain open, and we encourage anyone in need of medical care to seek it without delay. Temporary visitor restrictions are in place as we work to conserve water and minimize any impact on patient care. We remain in close contact with the City of Winston-Salem and have contingency plans in place to help ensure patients continue to receive safe, high-quality care during this disruption.
