Although Salem was founded in 1766, the towns of Winston and Salem did not merge until 1889, soon after R.J. Reynolds started his company in the vicinity. J Reynolds company, many other well known companies got their start in Winston-Salem as well, including Krispy Creme Doughnuts and Texas Pete Hot Sauces. The Salem and Bethabara Historic Districts are preserved in Winston-Salem, and the excitement of college life lives here with Wake Forest and Winston-Salem University nearby.
