I’m returning from vacation with a shift in my thinking.
Not…
How do I feel about my body?
But…
How awake am I to the life I’m experiencing through my body?

When I pay attention, I realize every meaningful memory I treasure has been experienced through this body.

Through this body I’ve savored fig preserves, nursed my babies, squeezed my grandbabies, gone skinny-dipping, laughed until my face hurt, wept until I fell asleep, napped in the afternoon sun, danced into the wee hours, made love into the wee hours, and stood beneath a sky full of stars.

Yes, my body has changed.

It asks different things of me now. A little more care and attention is needed.

But those changes have become invitations to listen more closely to my body-not reasons to become more pre-occupied with my body’s appearance.

Watching my granddaughters dance and swirl and jump and skip at the beach reminded me of something I hope they never lose-and something many of us are working to remember and reclaim.

Our bodies were never meant to be the most interesting thing about our lives.

Our bodies are how we experience our lives.

This week’s easy, THROUGH THIS BODY, is a reflection on growing older, embodiment, and the kind of life I want to keep saying yes to.

It ends with the truest sentence I know how to write right now:

I want a life so rich, so mean, and so fully lived that preoccupation with my body’s appearance becomes too small to contain me.

If that resonates with you, I’d love for you to read the essay and let me know your thoughts.

The 🔗 is in my bio.

I’d love to hear from you.

When do you feel the most awake to the life you’re experiencing through your body?

Much love,
Deb
