Is your kiddo struggling with navigating conflict, peer interactions, or active listening? Announcing Winston-Salem’s ‘Navigators: Social Thinking Groups’ of Spring 2026! Here, our in-house SLP, Rachel Johnson, will help develop social skills using a variety of board games. ‘Navigators’ consists of a weekly meeting focused on developing team-working skills, conversation initiation, conflict navigation, active listening, and more!

Ages 8-10 Tues (2:30-3:20) June 16th, 23rd, 31st, July 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th
Ages 11-13 Wed (2-2:50) June 17th, 24th, July 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th
Ages 14-16 Thurs (2:30-3:20) June 18th, 25th, July 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th

This summer we are offering two workshops! email hello@illumii to sign up!

One group, Navigators, led by Rachel Johnson, SLP navigates social skills for kiddos that may need a little extra support. Our second group, Calm and Connected, led by Nicole Iverson, Executive Function Coach, helps parents navigate relationships with kiddos with executive function troubles.

Whether you’re looking to protect your peace or just survive a hectic week, mental health is a practice. Here is how you can actually build those pillars of support for yourself:

✨Establish Boundaries (Saying "No" is a Full Sentence)
-> Work: Set an "out of office" or mute notifications after 6 PM.
-> Social: "I’d love to see you, but I don't have the social battery for a big group tonight. Can we do coffee 1-on-1 later?"
-> Emotional: "I want to support you, but I don't have the headspace to vent right now. Can we talk about this tomorrow?"

✨Create a Safe Space (Your Environment Matters)
-> Physical: Designate one corner of your home (even just a chair!) as a "phone-free zone" for reading or breathing.
-> Digital: Unfollow or mute accounts that make you feel "less than" or spark "comparison-itis."
-> Sensory: Use low lighting, a favorite scent, or a specific playlist to signal to your brain that it’s time to decompress.

✨Build an Easy Routine (Small Wins > Big Overhauls)
-> Morning: Start with 5 minutes of sunlight and hydration before checking your emails.
-> Evening: The "10-minute tidy"—clear your physical space to clear your mental space for the next day.
-> Anchoring: Tie a new habit to an old one (e.g., while the coffee brews, do 3 deep belly breaths).

✨Cultivate a Support System (Quality Over Quantity)
-> The Inner Circle: Identify 2-3 people who you can be "unfiltered" with.
-> Professional: Look into therapy, support groups, or mental health apps for objective guidance.
-> Community: Join a local hobby group or an online community where you feel seen and understood.

✨Take Actual Breaks (Rest is Not a Reward)
-> The Micro-Break: Every hour, look away from your screen at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
-> The Sensory Break: Step outside for 5 minutes of fresh air without your phone.
-> The "Do Nothing" Break: Allow yourself 15 minutes of guilt-free daydreaming or sitting in silence.

Reminder: You don’t have to do all of these at once. Pick one area to focus on this week and give yourself some grace while you adjust. 🤍

It’s important to remember, too, that challenges with executive function aren’t signs of laziness or lack of ambition. As a result of these delays, many students with deficits in executive skills will need more support and supervision from both parents and teachers during K-12 school years. Even after high school graduation these young adults often need continued guidance and support.
