Residents and staff gathered today for a walk around campus in recognition of June as Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month.

We walked to raise awareness about Alzheimer's and to show support for those living with the disease and the caregivers and families who walk this journey alongside them every day.

We look forward to participating in the Winston-Salem community's 2026 Walk to End Alzheimer’s on November 7, strengthening our resolve to stand united in the fight against Alzheimer’s while promoting brain health for all.

Blueberry season is officially here!

Residents enjoyed a wonderful trip to Mabes Berry Farm. They hand-picked juicy blueberries, filled baskets until they overflowed, and basked in gorgeous countryside views.

It was a berry sweet day on the farm!

This CNA Week, we pause to express our gratitude.

To the caregivers who show up with compassion, strength, dignity, and comfort—you make every moment matter for our residents. Your work changes lives in the most meaningful ways, and we are deeply grateful for all you do.

You are truly the heart of care--thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Arbor Acres was proud to be part of this month’s AgingWell Virtual Seminar Series, hosted by Deb Burcombe, Program Director of Outreach at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist.

Our community was beautifully represented by Executive Chef Jolie Shafer and resident artisan Karl Stauber, who each highlighted the powerful connection between creativity and wellness.

Recently named the 2024 National Executive Chef of the Year, Chef Jolie demonstrated her signature Seared Salmon with Blueberry Gastrique—a delicious, brain-healthy dish that proves nutritious living can be full of flavor.

Karl, a skilled woodturner and member of Artworks Gallery, shared how his craft enriches life at Arbor Acres while contributing to the vibrant Winston-Salem arts community.

Together, they exemplify how purpose, creativity, and well-being thrive at every stage of life.

Meet Our Board Members!

This month, we introduce you to Arbor Acres resident and Board Member, Don Eppert. He's in his final year on the Board--this time around. Here's a little more background about Don to help you get to know him.

Family: My wife, Kathie, and I have been married for 57 years and have been blessed with our daughter, Lara, who lives here in Winston-Salem. I also have an identical twin brother who lives with his family near Indianapolis, Indiana. My parents were residents of Arbor Acres approximately 40 years ago, making this community especially meaningful to me.

Professional Background: I bring 34 years of experience as a Human Resources professional, including 8 years with West Point Pepperell in New York City and 26 years with Hanes/Sara Lee in Winston-Salem.

Board Service & Commitment: About 20 years ago, I was invited to serve on the Arbor Acres Board and did so for six years. After moving into Arbor Acres six years ago, I was honored to be asked to serve again. This is my final year on the Board.

I have greatly enjoyed the opportunity to collaborate with fellow board members and contribute to the future of Arbor Acres. Working alongside professionals with deep expertise in law, real estate, accounting, finance, marketing—and strong community connections—has been both rewarding and educational. Together with senior management and consultants, this is an exceptionally capable and dedicated Board.

Fun: I have been an athlete all my life and now enjoy playing croquet, as well as participating in the many cultural opportunities Winston-Salem offers. I also enjoy reading and sharing good meals with fellow Arbor Acres residents and longtime friends in the community.

Thank you for your service, Don!

The beauty of Bianca’s Garden continues to bloom, enriched by the addition of boulders thoughtfully repurposed over the past year from the Aldersgate Square construction site several years ago.

This evolving landscape now also welcomes the new Weaver Heritage Garden—our Native Foraging and Medicinal Garden—bringing added purpose and vitality to the space. Already, it’s yielding results, with the first harvest of shiitake mushrooms enjoyed with many more to come.

Together, these gardens offer a place for connection and reflection while honoring our commitment to environmental stewardship that enhances the art of living well.
