Attention can look like playing, moving, exploring, or looking elsewhere while processing what’s being said.

Keep modeling language—even when you’re not sure it’s being noticed. Chances are, they’re taking in more than you think.

Did you know some children learn language in larger “chunks” instead of one word at a time? 💬✨

This is called Gestalt Language Processing (GLP). Gestalt language processors often use phrases they’ve heard before (also called scripts or echolalia) and gradually break them down into more flexible, self-generated language.

Common signs of GLP may include:
• Repeating lines from favorite shows, songs, or books 🎬
• Using long phrases before using single words
• Echoing what others say
• Seeming to communicate with “scripts” that have a specific meaning to them

These scripts are meaningful and are an important step in language development. With the right support, children can move from memorized phrases to more spontaneous communication. 💛
